...K.F.T. ...Tofu...

...this week for Friday Favorites...

...several weeks ago...when this was in the news...I saved the recipe to make a vegan version of KFC chick'n…

“In the 1940's, Colonel Sanders developed the original recipe chicken to be sold at his gas station diner. At the time, the recipe was written above the door so anyone could have read it. But today, we go to great lengths to protect such a sacred blend of herbs and spices. In fact, the recipe ranks among America's most valuable trade secrets."...(a quote from a vague KFC spokesperson)

...this was the photo posted with the article...it was a really interesting article...

11 spices — Mix with 2 cups white fl

1. 2/3 Ts salt
2. 1/2 Ts thyme
3. 1/2 Ts basil
4. 1/3 Ts oregano
5. 1 Ts celery salt
6. 1 Ts black pepper
7. 1 Ts dried mustard
8. 4 Ts paprika
9. 2 Ts garlic salt
10. 1 Ts ground ginger
11. 3 Ts white pepper

added MSG, which a rep for the chain confirms is a current ingredient.
...I started by freezing a block of tofu...
...thawing it and pressing it...I used my old tofu press that Scout made for me...
...then I froze it again...and thawed it again...
...gathered all the spices...there are quite a few...(11 haha)...
...measured them out...
...and mixed them with the flour...it makes a kind of dirty looking flour...
...then I pressed the tofu again...really well...using my new tofu press...
...and had a nice fairly dry firm block of tofu...
...and I just broke it into rough pieces...
...and marinated it in vegan No Chicken broth...it soaks it up and becomes rather juicy again...
...then I just dredged it in the flour mixture and baked it in the oven until it was browned and crispy...of course the original is fried...but I didn't want all that oil...
...and we had it with cole slaw and potato salad...of course...

...it was so delicious an the texture was perfect...I highly recommend this recipe...

~Have a lovely day!

  1. Looks worth a go, love the tofu presses, much easier than balancing a pan on top - cans of stuff in the pan as weights!

...this was so delicious...I think it may become a regular around here...and I have leftover mix for the coating...

  5. I WILL try that--though I am not really sure why I am so instantly set on it since I never really loved KFC...mostly it was the bones though. Even when I ate animals I wanted to be distanced from it and hated to eat chicken unless it was boneless. So weird to think about now.

Anyways, it looks and sounds good and would be a new twist on baked tofu for us.

You make me feel like a primitive using a cutting board with the flour canister on top for pressing! Ha!
