...Beach Readiness...

...I finished crocheting the Salt Grass Beach Hat...
...and cast about the house for some wire...Katie recommends millinery wire for the brim...which of course I don't have on hand...but in the Man's toolbox...I found this wire...he used it for something on his short wave radio...making a long antenna or something like that...it's kindof too thin for the brim support...so I used two loops and just wound it together...Katie also recommends a fastener...

...this black wire does show through a bit on the brim...so I may go back and do some sort of overcast stitch to hide it a little bit better...
...from the top...
...I'm really pleased with how this hat turned out...and it was completely FREE!...well I know the things I repurposed cost something to begin with...but they probably weren't going to be used again as they were...(the hula skirt for sure - haha)...

...I'll be sure to get a photo of me wearing it AT THE BEACH!...

...Friday Favorites...a fail...sort of...

...Y'all already know that I love Vegan Banana Pudding...
...but I've never been too much of a fan of the bananas in the pudding...cold and soggy...

...so I had the 'brilliant' - haha...idea of adding pureed banana to the pudding...
...and I used these Kedem Vanilla tea biscuits for the vanilla wafers...
...just layered the usual way...
...wafers...pudding...wafers...pudding...
...just no banana layer...
...I'm going to add sliced fresh banana later...
...the banana turned the pudding a funny green colour though...
...some perfectly ripe organic bananas...
...sliced and added to the pudding...it was disappointing...there was not a lot of banana flavor...
...leftover the next morning...still not as good as 'regular' banana pudding...
...but the wafer pudding is good...like a soft bread pudding...

...so...I won't be making my banana pudding this way again...

...instead of W.I.A.Y. ...emptying the fridge...

...I have too much fresh food in my fridge to leave for the beach...
...so I got busy using it up...I washed the spinach...and saved the stems...
...and just water sauteed it with some mushrooms...and a little garlic...
...that was a delicious side...I'll make it again for sure...
...then I dried a bunch of kale massaged and sprinkled with salt-pepper-nooch...I'll put that in a baggie and take it to the beach for a snack...
...there were two lemons...an orange...and the kale and spinach stems that needed to be used up...so I got out a bag of frozen blueberries...
...put it all in the Vitamix with some cranberry juice...
...and blended it up...the banana made it kind of creamy...I don't usually put banana in my smoothies...
...it made a huge smoothie...so I repurposed a water bottle that Scout had bought...
...and finally we were gifted a bag of fresh homegrown okra...and I for sure didn't want that to get wasted...
...so I froze it...and we'll enjoy that bit of summer this winter...

...so the fridge is in pretty good shape for vacation...

...W.I.P. Wednesday...PLARN Beach Bag F.O. ...

...as I neared the top of the bag...I left just a one stitch hole...(single crochet-chain one-skip one-single crochet)...because I wanted to make sure my knots didn't pull through the finished bag...
...then I threaded my homemade acrylic yarn rope through the holes and knotted the other end...
...and voilĂ ...a finished ABSOLUTELY FREE beach bag...just in time...

...Beach Hat Progress...

...just following the pattern...I started with a magic loop...crocheting with wet strands of rafia...
...there are lots of joins when your thread is only 6 feet long...but with the wet rafia...I just stick one thread onto the one I'm currently crocheting with and continue crocheting just like it was a single strand...
...seems to be working out so far...
...when I put it aside for the night...it dries...of course...
...but that's not a problem...I just start crocheting again with wet threads...
...as I started down the crown...
...I draped it over a hat my sweet sissie had given me years ago...it makes a perfect 'hat form'...haha...
...crown is finished...starting the brim...
...using a bowl as the form now...

...One Hula Skirt = One Beach Hat...

...when I saw this pattern for the Salt Grass Beach Hat over at Salty Pearl Crochet...I knew I wanted to make it...
...and I had the 'materials. on hand...

...you may remember seeing this dollar store hula skirt on the 'river bank' at Vacation Bible School...

...and I am not likely to be wearing a hula skirt any time soon...so I thought I'd repurpose the grass into a Salt Grass Beach Hat...
...it was easy to take it apart...
...each strand of rafia is just looped over the twine tie and pulled back through the loop...so when you slide it off the twine it falls right out...
...and you're left with rafia threads about 6 ft. long each...
...I just wound those into a ball...
...I did a few test runs crocheting with the rafia and found that it was easier to work with wet...I got that idea from the Man's Mamaw who used to soak her reeds for basketmaking...and just a second in the water makes a very pliable thread...

...we had a lot to do to get ready for this year's beach trip...so...let's get crocheting...

...Friday Favoites...

...I love tea...but y'all already know that...

...and I like lots of different kinds of tea...
... but if I had to choose a favorite...

...it'd have to be be regular ol' Lipton Tea...

...and I prefer it hot..but I like it iced too...

...it's what I grew up drinking...I love using loose tea...as a tea bag usually makes it too strong for me...and I can choose exactly how much loose tea to add...

...I keep it in a really old Lipton Green Label tea tin that I got at an Asian shop in Raleigh the first year we were married...

...you can see my cute little tea strainer here...

...and my favorite mug here...

...what's your favorite tea?...

...W.I.P. Wednesday...

...as I near the end of the Plarn Beach Bag...I found that I was running out of Food Lion white bags...and the object of the project was NOT to acquire any more bags...it was to use up the ones I had...
...there were a few white bags that had other colours of printing on them...but I didn't want to incorporate any other colours in the bag...
...so...I cut the printed front off...and then just did a spiral around the remaining white bag to get a fairly long piece of 'thread'...
...and then as I crocheted with just the white part...I spaced these plarn threads out between regular white FL bags...but there is a slight difference in the shade of white...if you notice things like that...haha...
...and then I went ahead and twisted up some rope...jsut out of white acrylic yarn that I already had on hand...
...I was really pleased with how they turned out...I haven't made 'rope' since Scout was a Cub Scout...
...I made two...of course...one for each handle...and I'll leave a small hole a few rows from the top of the bag to catch the knotted rope handle...

...what's in your workbasket?...

...a vegan shopping trip...

...I used my shopping bags...even though I kinda need some more white bags for my plarn project...
...some sunflower seeds for topping salads...my favorite beefless burgers...taco shells...my favorite Lipton tea...whole wheat bread...and for some reason...all of the tofu was $1 off...so I stocked up and saved $6...
...and the organic salads were $1 off as well...maybe they are trying to promote healthy eating...haha...Scout's favorite Blue Machine...corn on the cob...collards (of course)...chick peas...great northerns...and cucumbers...
...balsamic vinegar...oil...deli made chips (Scout's fave)...regular tortilla chips (the Man's fave)...potatoes...Vidalia onions...the Man's blueberry muffins...and sugar...
...raspberries...cherries...peaches...mushrooms...zucchini...strawberries...apples...avocados...and two different ripenesses of bananas...
...some non-food items...BBQ chips...dish detergent...T.P. ...and some plastic fruit for a Children's Church story...
...and finally Halo Top Birthday Cake to try...

~Wishing you a lovely start to your week!
