...9.29...Over the Weekend...

...I made another homemade Poppi before we went shopping...
...this one is about half juice - the antioxidant one from Aldi...
...and then one can of sparkling water...1 tsp of ACV and one grind of pink salt...and one packet of stevia...it's really pretty good...
...and just a completely normal shopping trip this week...we got everything to make a covered dish for a Church supper...more on that in a bit...
...and now that it's officially fall...(it just doesn't feel like it yet)...it's time to plant the winter garden...
...so I got a couple of square feet ready for a lettuce bed...
...and past the pepper...I got a another square foot ready for the Napa cabbages that we started in pots on the porch...just in that short time...the roots filled up the cups they were planted in...
...and then I got all of the first two pots of lettuce planted...
...it's a lot of lettuce...but we eat a lot of lettuce...and I did a better job of spacing them out this year...
...and three neat little rows of Napa Cabbages...
...then I picked the green beans...they're really slowing down now
...just a few more handfuls probably and they'll be done...and that's ok...because I'm just about ready to need their square feet of ground...haha...
...I put the second pot of lettuce beside the marigolds and I'll plant them later...after I pull up the pepper and eggplant...
...and I picked the dried cowpeas...I kind of counted them while I was picking them and there's over 100 peas this time...and still a lot on the plants...
...we had a covered dish supper at the Church on Sunday......we used this recipe which she calls North Dakota Casserole...a everyone we knew in North Dakota really did call this "Funeral Hotdish"...
...just using Impossible instead of the ground beef...
...I don't often cook an entire box of pasta...that's a lot of pasta...
...then add the tomatoes...and I dont' know where the rest of the photos are...but we just followed the recipe...
...but while the oven was one for the casserole...I baked a tray of tofu for the week...
...and in other food prep news I Gridder-ed some green beans and Brussels sprouts out on the porch...

...9.27...Dinner and a Movie...

...for dinner we made loaded baked potatoes with the two largest potatoes in our bin were in the spotlight...tofu sour cream, violife cheddar, vegan bacon bits...and chives...and baked tofu triangles with steak sauce in the shadows...it was delicious...

...and the movie was Toast...it was of course a film about some people...and it's a true story...based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by the cookery writer Nigel Slater...it was really good...

...what have you been watching lately?...

...9.26...Friday Update...

...we tackled the third 40-foot stip of edging around the blueberry beds beside the house...
...this section is pretty much packed clay...(we ameliorated it with peat and potting soil before planting the blueberries)...so it was really hard to dig the trench for the edging...
...but we proceeded pounding the edging into place in the trench...
...and the side of the house edging is complete...
...this section has black front and back so that was nice...
...and the piece that was leftover was a perfect fit around the cherry tree...
...we debated making it square as all of the other edges are corners...but in the end we decided that would look odd so we went with a circle...

...I'm really happy to have another section done...3 down...2 to go...oh...and one of those is white on the inside...so I'll be painting it BEFORE installation...haha...

...9.25...Delicious Vegan Food we ate...

...we celebrated the Man's birthday...and he requested a blueberry cobbler (one of his favorite desserts) instead of a birthday cake...
...and these are the only photos of it...
...I did take a photo of him blowing out his candle to send to his Mom...

...and of course I've posted about it before...

...what delicious food have you been eating?

...W.I.P. Wednesday...

...just continuing with the Minecraft vest for Our Airman's Wife...this is the progress so far...I've cast off for the arm scyes...

...but earlier...
...I thought that since the squares were 17 cm wide...
...they also needed to be 17 cm tall...but that's not going to work out with the pattern unless I make it longer...
...this is about where you last saw it on my lap in the car...
...but I frogged a bit...
...and reknit to a length of 15 cm for each square height...so not a perfect square but it will fit with the 44 cm length of the pattern...
...and I'm trying to be really careful with the colour changes as I don't want any gaps....or ladders...where the two colours meet...I'm just pulling both yarns really tightly when I change colours and it seems to be nice and flat and even...
...and this is the back of the vertical colour change...I am really happy with how this recycled yarn is knitting up...

...what's in your workbasket this week?

...9.23...Tuesdays with Julia...THE FINAL COUNTDOWN #5...

...this is a whole recipe simply titled "CANNED ONIONS"...and Julia has this to say about canned onions...All the brands of canned “small boiled onions” we have tried have tasted, to us, rather unpleasantly sweetish and over acidulated; they also need more cooking to make them tender. However they are so useful in an emergency that we offer the following treatment which improves them considerably...

...remember that this book was written in the early sixties...and maybe canned onions were more of a 'thing' then...and there are a couple of varieties of canned onions for sell on Amazon...maybe for preppers...but they are already chopped and sautéed...and Julia is obviously talking about small boiled whole onions...I can't even find an old image of such a thing on the interwebs...but they sound sort of like jarred cocktail onions...

...so I searched Amazon and found some cocktail with just a few ingredients (onions, water, sea salt, acetic acid, citric acid)...and since she comments that the ones she had tried were overly acidulated...I thought that these would do just fine...kind of spendy though...over $8 for a side dish...
...we had it with veggie burgers and air fried potatoes...it was a pretty good and expensive side dish for that particular meal...

...and all of the particulars are over at The Vegan Version...

...9.22...Over the Weekend...

...just a normal Saturday morning...
...very small weekly shop...
...and then this weekend's project was to repaint the upstairs porch...which here in the South is called a 'piazza'...

...so I gave it a good scrub...we've painted it before...back in 2022...but it was getting pretty scuffed up and we already had the paint so the Man wanted to paint it again...

...and the forecast was for 20% chance of rain...
...so...of course this happened...
...and the 20% is just the probability that it will rain...it says nothing about how much rain you'll get if it does rain...
...it absolutely poured...even soaking the screened back porch...
...and filling the newly mown slough...
...but once it was over...we proceded...I removed some cracked caulking...
...and recaulked...
...then taped eveything and did the cutting in...
...and the Man got out his big roller...
...and painted the entire porch in about 15 minutes...
...stepping into the guest room doorway to paint the last little bit...
...all done and left to dry for a couple of days...of course a couple of leaves blew onto it right away...
...I think the only other thing I accomplished was picking a bunch more of the cowpeas...of coure I didn't need to water anything...
...oh...and I made a double batch of Toby's...
...can't let a new week start without that...haha...
