...just a little flashback to just over a year ago...

...this was the entry foyer with the bright blue carpet and the metal railing...
...now...this railing doesn't meet code...it's only about 3 feet tall...
...so we needed a new rail...and we decided that instead of a rail...we'd build a half wall...
...we had the same arrangement in our house in Balsam Grove...except that there we built a half wall all the way down the stairs and here...we're going to do an oak rail...more on that later...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5KA_5TWJ6C8rzWIXUjMZG-l6rRsz9sIUmRRaG7RlhgIvVkHk9mZXqQ1VymcPQy-_5vAiWXtUFa_A4D_on-Ru-IyhrVTgOy2727evY7cLSOhT4Lq1zZPglvPDb2v0Q6KNRu2F43Q/s400/DSC01678.jpg)
...so the Man...with a lot of help from Scout...built the wall in the basement...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw6b3GzXsDtauqSrAiyrdt4AD_JRIZGG4EYO1og_EhKv0HgE6XzmLuocnRLPO86wGDTV43L_GmRV-0RvOdnOm9RNkXUwLP41VkNxJWl6mugWW0DP8qiB8tNEh_05PcQd7S14FAfQ/s400/DSC01680.jpg)
...carried it upstairs and screwed it in place...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4D0i2fQAJ9vCTPT-VQy0W9TUi2O5pvI84UUizf0mKuwDrT3TetggFB7dXLNwqH6Mlua30hfk7x7lxEf0zilcNRBOxSxs_NOi0Gqq8kYcr-PxkEINpNrxrNLRdESBnqGdcCpGYjQ/s400/DSC01681.jpg)
...ahhh...safer already...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0a_KKyjviWjgFX6bZacsxX6O90eXkqdkIHQ4vc28lXDjI8hvihRb4HQd3gnMsMG6kIdCTYc9yto4rKaJzMY-eyiotHIV9Zg7KfNIPJNj5WetWjOW5yhLt4PSPfGIBwI3YLhTfxw/s400/DSC01684.jpg)
...Jack doesn't know quite what to think of the new wall...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPhx8A02VPpC3WJxruI4BfZUGLmg5PUIo7mjmJobThQIXE1_me8xPqjdNX4HYGWkGfT_6rJks9Cw7LrbG_LvQDphfdDLkopOYzT_B8xa8lAGGZhIAgHh4hyphenhyphenWPjnz0unu29puBX5A/s400/DSC01685.jpg)
...so the boys did the wood work...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5krUR-t4TGTxgTEoodzEyxaXqh-GbcDLdZRxiada5C4bQNHJukExxN0w511y9t2Dp6hGSTamFufdBfCLXnGQFPpix_SgtWyh9NyNkLSIB3EBjr4tFyb6WG7DCE0UmRSjGE52cKg/s400/DSC01686.jpg)
...and I put on the sheetrock...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0EQRp6Flz8ElgY0AIOtW1fTsSt7yn-cbwJJK4lgxOz6Gwjze7MW6WXmtwgO-Ujwj5tA7mjQGiDcTvAK4-kwiOpf66W1h4FxMsbaWRjlWFEvlfmczT8QY68LGMHfi6baPnj9ozpA/s400/101_2405.jpg)
...the spackling required some acrobatics...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOnpBI9ef1OzvBCVRC2yb2bVWhI0aIjlSba3V5nGsGhXALcYHvVhga0u7-5s5IRexVx-XVziNxG310j-Kz6fq1C0Ye2wXYSbak-n0dIlO5SWzcrDONe5uhNzg5LgnAuNxKE3B-/s400/DSC02386.jpg)
...so then...it needed a topper...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZcaROJKd-FsTbCOvi1QGY7qksdGOMx1jG9l3LL7hZnaZHmjH-ycFoTeXM2cbAkUxabqPVNid9U3lDbz0qDPBfPXmdUStWlgqtCw8Bfy0TQILbivgKlFCAXPXI7TTrpwM_bgbm/s400/DSC02387.jpg)
...and Scout chose the perfect oak board for the top...
...we cut it to length...sanded and coated it with polyurethane...and then did that about 3 more times...so it's perfectly smooth and shiny...and matches the new wood floors...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-65wHZdirxAsWddhH2az_HGK-vxpQK0auA9qSYGBV1PWvY_qCRWZYqlzS5Mynf8Y3UclengHms6rMnCl1N413E2A51N8MPW0Vr4Aqaca__zH1NQ5TpIbRv_h4WIiZXvEEZMM4/s400/DSC02388.jpg)
...so there it is spackled and topped...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggUm_4wiW4T8cuqGzvt9Q-Rzcl39Qx2r9YmBOPnoIqSsNjxzGkG_XXnVDT4jsR7TOcHr8XZup8_rAQQe1sh-d5xjCmUj2u9O-2gmLrZkBfFUCoHqx7hIPK3PKwEGfw1yzlw-aINQ/s320/DSC06219.JPG)
...and now a coat of paint...which requires just about the same acrobatics as the spackling...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDoYGfJ5PPmS5fF4YSp6xgmebo3FpTcfRQi8HkkYnxtDYnczJLInl9fQGs8dJL-gEQ8vNCVXClx8jcgoWOX-EDe8_4j-eOSouBuVQCQtlMu2OwL9UBmNtjou6xo7IU0RN74TAfPQ/s320/DSC06220.JPG)
...one coat...
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDDMhSopQQCBiSbYBPBTwu0yMTJQCtiYjHWrKUz_ivkuWrOjbrBHUmS8ne2ZeMsguBDDs44VG4W8T0aieuGO6EmSM65hKhzhFab_4mfvlkalOynUzp1QGGRSTaYAiyEFVWC-bzzw/s320/DSC06308.jpg)
...and two...
...a finished wall...ready for the new oak railing...
~Have a lovely day!
Really nice. You all did a great job. MOM
ReplyDeleteLooking good. It takes time to sort out a 'new' house!
ReplyDeleteI much prefer the half wall. Even if the railing was high enough to meet code, I prefer the new half wall.
ReplyDeleteWOW! What a big job. Impressive!
