...we've been opening our Christmas presents early...
...and this is my "BIG" present for this year...and I actually knew I was getting it...because it picked it out...it's a cedar storage bench...
...and the plan it to paint it white...and fill the storage area with my outdoor kitchen and put it on the back porch...it will be a lot handier than toting the equipment in and out every time I want to cook something outside...
...unboxing...
...and then I took all of the pieces outside to give them a light sanding so the white paint will adhere better...
...this is the back...and the plan for it is to make it fold down over the armrests as a sort of table that I can cook on...
...so to make the back flat and table-like...I'm cutting a copy of it out of plywood...
...and then because I didn't like the open spaces in between the spindles...I cut down some old molding to fit 'exactly' between them...and rounded the edges with the sander so they'd match the existing spindles better...
...then I clamped them together and nailed everything in place...
...then I had a bunch of nail holes to fill...
...so I filled all of those on the back...
...and also on the front...because the molding I was reusing had holes where we removed the nails...
...and got those all filled as well...
...and then I had the bright (NOT) idea to fill in the gap between the plywood and the cedar back with wood putty as well...and pretty quickly realized that caulk would have been better...but I'd started with that so I finished the top...
...but not the sides...I just caulked them...
...and then I decided that I really wanted to leave the inside of the storage bench area the natural cedar...
...so I taped paper over all of those areas...
...now...on to the painting...
~Have a lovely day!
