...Nashville Sightseeing #3...

...another full...full day...

...we got up early and headed to the Parthenon Park...
...I love this misty morning photo...
...and this one as we approached...looks like it might have been taken in Greece...
...Scout in the photo for a bit of scale...
...ornate ceiling...
...a huge statue of Athena...
...her backside...
...the huge bronze doors were pretty impressive...
...and a peaceful place for a stroll...
...then we headed back downtown to the State Capitol for some history...
...what it looked like a little over 100 years ago...look at all the people on the roof...think safety first...
...it looked like most Capitol buildings we've toured...and we always tour them when we're near them...
...legislative rooms remind me of when Scout was a page...
...view from the balcony back downtown...
...view from the back (?) overlooking Bicentennial Park...(our next destination)...
...on the way down the rather steep hill...we passed this plaque...so we read it...of course...

...and Scout commented that there is an actor that looks just like Johnson...

...and he's right...Tommy Lee Jones looks a LOT like Andrew Johnson...weird...
....hundreds of steps down that hill...and we're parked at the top...so guess what...
...but we arrived at the park...
...and there's a huge cement map of Tennessee...
...and a fountain...with children playing on this hot August day...
...a pretty ampitheatre...
...and these bells...I told Scout that I wished they would play...and then we started up the mall...
...and guess what...it was noon...and the chimes started playing...some Tennessee patriotic song I think...
...and there was this huge floating globe...pretty impressive...
...walking back up the Mall...the timeline goes in reverse this way...so we read it backwards...we should have started with the prehistory at the other end...HA!
...1000 steps or so back up to the capitol...
...and then on to the State Museum...we also always go to these when we can...they're almost always free to the public...and so interesting...
...we did start with the prehistoric section here...
...isn't it just amazing that pottery somehow survives hundreds (or thousands) or years...
...and even more amazing that this huge 40 foot long dugout canoe survived...

...the placard tells us that it was found in the Cumberland River in the late 1700's and pulled out and used as a feed trough for cattle...hence the worn ridges on the sides where the cattle rubbed as they ate...
...and I love pioneer cabin exhibits too...
...that an entire family lived in this tiny space...
...sweet little dolls...
...a model of the State Capitol cupola...that is under re-construction right now...
...Civil War exhibits...we noted that the officer's uniforms were so similar in colour that it's a wonder they knew which side they were on...
...then it was back to our hotel for one last night...

...Good-bye Nashville...

~Have a lovely day!

  2. looks like a very busy day!! i had no idea there was a "Parthenon" so close - wonder why they chose that era to replicate in Tennessee?

  3. I believe it was built for a World's Fair back in the day. I used to live in Nashville.

  4. Nice. Seems to be a lot to do there and I notice that there appears to be a lot of Greek influence in the buildings and structures. I too wonder why.
