...continuing our jaunt through West Virginia from before the wedding...still on our way to our final destination Babcock State Park...we passed the New River Bridge...
...so of course we had to drive across it...the view from the bridge in a car is kinda disappointing...you really can't see much...
...so we went up and turned around and came back across on the other side of the bridge...first there are woods and solid ground...
...and then it suddenly drops away to nothing...you can get a quick glimpse of the river on this side...
...next we stopped at the visitor center...
...and saw our first view of the bridge...
...the sun was making it hard to take a very clear picture...but it was still pretty impressive...
...I always read all of the informational signage...do you?...
...as we continue down the trail we looked back up at the rocks and the first overlook...
...and all the pretty wooden steps going down into the gorge...it's really steep...
...some more fascinating information about the gorge...
...and the bridge...
...a nice view of the gorge...someone told me at the overlook that it used to take 45 minutes to go down into the gorge and back up on the little two lane road...
...This Saturday there will be a lot going on at the bridge...Bridge Days is an annual event where they close the bridge and let people jump off of it...amazing...right?...and there's a 'catwalk' underneath...that's a tour I'd like to take...
...some pretty wildflowers...buttercups I believe...
...and I'm pretty sure these are sea oats...
~Have a lovely day!

what a nice little tour! we've flown over the gorge - it's quite impressive from overhead also. love, k
ReplyDeleteI rafted the New River once, and take out was at the bridge. It is impressive from the river.
ReplyDeleteBridge Day is a lot of fun as well. Many moons ago, my photo of this bridge was in WV Magazine.
ReplyDeleteI do read the signs - and spend ages trying to identify buildings or places of interest from the sillhouettes they give.
ReplyDeleteWow, I love that bridge. I am terrified by heights, but I'd brave it for that gorgeous bridge
