...Over the Weekend...

...I had posted about a Stone Church in our area a while ago...I didn't get to tour that one...
...but because of the Reformation...we did get to tour this one...Scout calls this one "the graveyard Church"...because it's been here for almost 300 years and it's graveyard has grown quite large and sort of surrounds the Church...and has spilled out across the road...
...this is the side entrance that our guide told us most people use now...
...looking up at the bell tower...
...the original 'front' of the Church...it now kinda looks like the back...
...I was trying to capture the wavy old glass...I didn't really succeed...but it's neat to see the balcony stairs through the window...one interesting thing our guide told us that there are two sets of stairs to the balcony...this set has 15 stairs...but the other side only has 14...funny...
...coming in through the side entrance...
...like the other stone church...it has a wrap-around 3 sided balcony...
...the Chancel area was remodeled to the 'Victorian Style'...our guide told us...
...and the pews in the balcony were replaced...
...another attempt to capture the wavy glass in the windows...
...looking down from the balcony...we were told that the posts supporting the balcony came from a ship...
...during the remodel at the turn of the last century...they also enclosed the roof...and made a cove ceiling...
...and because we were the only people in the Church...our guide thought it would be alright to show us some areas that were not usually shown...because we were so interested...

...this is the oldest Sunday School room and is actually in the bell tower...it has not been remodeled...
...the Bell Room...and the Bell Rope...he said they are working on the bell right now...but they still ring it for weddings and funerals...
...and then he took us into the adjoining Sunday School Building...also not part of the tour and he apologized for how 'messy' it was...but we enjoyed seeing it and hearing about how they met in the larger common area for a short service and then went to their individual classes...
...the view from what used to be the back door across the street to the expanded graveyard...
...the current view from the street...the Sunday School Building is to the left...and you can definitely see where they remodeled the roof...
...the old door and light...

...I just love touring old buildings...how about you?

~Have a lovely day!

  3. Interesting about the graveyard. Old churches here often look as though they were built on a mound with retaining walls. In fact, this is because the mound is really hundreds, sometimes a thousand years of burials. As the population exploded an answer had to be found and then municipal graveyards were established. Some of these are very beautiful parks, my hometown cemetary was one with flowerbeds and many trees. Dickens sometimes refers to the state of the old London burial grounds, Bleak House is one book, describing the burial of Nemo.
