...Grinding Grains...in a coffee mill...

...I know I'm supposed to post a W.I.P. Wednesday post today...but I can't show any pics of the secret socks...and I'm working on another baby blanket...same as usual...this one is supposed to be Dr. Seuss circles...so I'll post about it when I've finished...probably next week...

...in the meantime...I've been toying with the idea of getting a grain mill...
...I like the idea of freshly ground grains...full of nutrients...and defnitely just a whole food...nothing else added....
...I do store my flour in the freezer...but I think it would be better for us if it were not even ground...

...but I'm not sure I want to invest in a grain mill that would grind fine flour...or get a multi purpose tool like a Vitamix that's supposed to be able to grind grains into flour...

...so y'all let me know your thoughts on the matter...

...in the meantime...

...I thought I'd experiment with a tool I already have...
...an old, old coffee mill...
...so I poured in some whole grain wheat...
...It sort of reminded me of Laura Ingalls Wilder's The Long Winter...they ground grain in a coffee mill and made brown bread...
...gave it a whir...
...and...wow...it sure does look like whole wheat flour...
...give it a sift...
...with my finest sieve...
...it certainly feels like whole wheat flour...
...this is the little bit left in the sieve...bran mostly I guess...I think it's fine enough to just dump it in with the flour anyway...
...and in just a couple of minutes...I have a 1/2 cup of freshly ground whole wheat flour...I'm tickled...I may not need a grain mill after all...

~Have a lovely day!

  2. Love it when you discover that you already have the tools you need. Good luck grinding your own!

  3. If your old coffee mill works fine then that is probably a great alternative and certainly a lot cheaper than a Vitamix. I just purchased a new blender; much like a Vitamix but slightly less expensive. It is so loud and doesn't grind grains (I too want to grind grains for bread making). I don't want to try to use my new blender for this purpose in case I ruin it for other purposes. I'm still in the process of deciding whether the blender meets my needs or whether it should be returned. If the latter then I wait to find a good one later.
