...9.30...Over the Weekend...

...we decided to try out a rice-cooker pancake recipe...it basically makes a small cake sized pancake...
...that was for the Man...I prefer nice crispy waffles...but the Man liked it...
...and I tried once again with the Buckwheat waffles...I thought if I made them rather small I might have more success getting them out...and it worked...YAY!

...then I went for a nice breezy bike ride...the Man was a little bit worried as some of the storm damaged trees continue to fall...
...this is from the neighborhood behind us where we usually walk in the evening...we can actually see this tree from our back porch...
...and these other scenes are from the 1960s neighborhood that I always ride through...lots of branches and standing water...
...this big tree fell over onto this house...
...that's scary...so sad for them...hopefully not too much damage...
...the streets are not in the best condition for biking...just lots of storm debris everywhere...
...most people have already piled up the branches from their yards...
...and workmen continue to restore power, phone, and cable/internet...so thankful for them...
...back at home...I picked about 72 beans...I kind of counted them as I picked them...
...and added to the bag I had picked through the week...
...I had a sinkful of Rattlesnake beans...
...or a pot full...I'm cooking them on the porch...but with electricity this time...
...while those cooked I cut off the sea oats...BEFORE they drop all their seeds...we'll be replacing these with something else next year...as the dropped-seed-sprout management is just too much...haha...I'll dig out the roots later...
...and piled them up for pickup...
...and we had a yummy supper of homegrown beans with potatoes and cornbread...

~Wishing you a lovely start to your week!

...9.28...Dinner and no Movie... (Hélène)

...we have power...I am so thankful for electricity...everything is more difficult without it for sure...at least here we have water even if we don't have power...

...starting with some Blogger comments...

...to my sweet sissie Karen who blogs from her boat at McCraw Sails...Hey K...Your cushions look amazing...I knew they would...you could definitely go into the upholstery business...haha...and I can't wait to see the new roof...Love, T

...to karen from Pumpkin Sunrise...Hi Karen...your cardigan is so pretty...and it looks great on you!

...to Éphée from L'éphémère quotidienneté des repas et autres trucs de magie...Hi Éphée...your scramble looks delicious...I always get mine more done that though...the grape grilled cheese looks yummy too...and you're right about the olive version as well...oh and that sweet smiling pup...love that too...

...to Penny from Snap That Penny...Hi Penny...Happy Autumn to you!...I loved your 'moody' photo...very Halloween-y...

...to Beth from BLD IN MT : LIVING A SIMPLE LIFE IN THIS INTERCONNECTED WORLD...Hi Beth...I loved reading about how you paid off your mortgage early (I love pretty much anything frugal like that)...it's quite an accomplishment...and all the glimpses of your home and how much you love it...

...on the reading front...I'm almost done with the Mudfrog papers...and then I think I'm completely done with Dickens...
...we have power now...but we did not last night...so it was another camp stove dinner...cabbage is cooking in one pot and potatoes in the other...
...of course I put my cabbage into a skillet and carmelized it a bit (maybe a bit too much)...I didn't do that with the Man's cabbage...and I fried up a slice of tofu as well...and you can just see the edge of a cornbread pancake...I need to make those more often...it's just a regular cornbread batter but instead of baking it you fry it in a skillet...

...so we had another candlelit supper...

...so...of course there was no movie...we listened to a baseball game on the radio...it reminded me so much of spending a week at Grandma's when I was little...Grandaddy always listened to baseball games on the radio...

...and those announcers...their language is so descriptive it's really impressive...you really can just visualize the game in your head...do they do that with other sports...or is it just baseball?...

~Have a lovely weekend!

...9.27...Friday (Hélène)...Update...

...right now we are in the midst of a hurricane...not really as they have downgraded it to a tropical storm now...but when it first started here it was still a category one hurricane...

...and we are still without power...the power went off yesterday around 5:00 pm...so I'm posting this with a hotspot on my phone and battery backup on the laptop...
...we got out the camp stove to make dinner last night...and I'm making coffee right now...
...while that was brewing...I stepped off the back porch to check the rain gauge...because it looked empty...and it looked empty because it was completely full...not sure how much rain we got overnight...but at least 5 inches...haha...
...a few candlelit scenes from last night...
...supper on the campstove...
...tomato soup and grilled cheese sammies...
...I always put Ritz crackers in my soup (like Daddy did)...but the Man always puts Saltines in his...which do you prefer?...

...so obviously no renovation work happened yesterday...
...but earlier in the week...we set up our cutting station out in the yard...
...while it was still steamy and hot outside...
...we cut the molding for the other side of the kitchen...
...using our little angle finder thing-y...
...to help us figure the angle of that little corner (spice) cupboard...

...we set the molding on top of the cabinets but we've not attached it yet...we're going to finish the sink side first before we empty those cupboards...
...and we installed a new streamlined light over the sink...
...and a much larger matching one for the center of the room...it is dimmable and has a remote...which we'll probably never use...but the Man is installing a piece that will connect it to the wifi...
...using our nifty laser leveler...
...to get it perfectly square...
...and the Man screws the mounting frame in place...the light fixture just sort of slides onto those rails...
...both new lights...

...9.26...Delicious Vegan Food we ate...

...I made another batch of Vegan Cottage Cheese...
...just like for the feta for the Jennifer Anniston salad...first I cubed a block of tofu into pretty small pieces...
...and then I cooked it for about 10 minutes in water with about a tablespoon of salt and a half cup of vinegar...
...then I spread it out to dry a bit...but I stopped there and didn't put it into the oven...it's firm enough for cottage cheese at this point...
...added some almond milk cream...
...it's really good...I can't say that cottage cheese was one of my favorite things ever...but this really hits the spot if you want some...
...and this is my kimchi...it's good like this on its own...or topping a salad...
...but one of my favorite snacks is to put some kimchi on a cracker and top it with some vegan cottage...it's the perfect little amuse-bouche...crunch/spicy/creamy...
...I also love it with peaches...and that diminutive glass of juice is the leftover pineapple juice from the Man's birthday cake mixed with some grapefruit and cranberry juice...it's really good too...

...what delicious food have you been eating lately?...

~Have a lovely day!

...9.25...W.I.P. Wednesday...

...both of these little sewing projects from last week involve black cloth...so they're a kindof hard to see...
...I started with the black flannel that I had used as 'blackout' curtains for our room before we got proper ones...
...and I took off the little wooden valance thing from the plantation blinds in the guest room...
...and then just sewed down the corners to make a little pocket that would fit over that piece...
...but the fabric wasn't quite long enough...so I just added a piece at the bottom...
...the blackout curtain just slips over the wooden piece to hang over the outside (room facing) side of the window...
...and here they are in place in the guest room...the previous solution was black trash bags...so this is much better...right Sissie?...

...there is a pretty old fashioned street light on the sidewalk right outside this room...so these will just offer a little bit more darkness in the guest room hopefully making it easier for our guests to sleep...
...and then already you've seen this brown bathmat...because we used to use it at the top of the stairs before we got a prettier one...
...so I just cut another piece of the black flannel to cover it...
...leaving enough overhang to stitch the channels and tuck it in all the way around...
...then I just sort of pressed the fabric down into the grooves and stitched along the depression...
...I thought about making a bias binding...but I just stitched all the way around the edge in the depression left by the original binding...
...I am so happy with how it turned out...
...it looks great in the newly remodeled bathroom...
...and our guests will have something soft and absorbent to step out of the shower onto...

...both projects took less than a half hour and used things I already had...my favorite kind of project...

...what's in your workbasket this week?...

~Have a lovely day!
