Fickle February...

"They say that February is the shortest month, but you know they could be wrong.

Compared calender page against calender page, it looks to be the shortest, all right. Spread between January and March like lard on bread, it fails to reach the crust on either slice. In its galoshes--and you'll never catch February in stocking feet--it's a full head shorter than December, although in leap years, when it has growth spurts, it comes up to April's nose.

However more abbreviated than its cousins it may look, February feels longer than any of them. It is the meanest moon of winter, all the more cruel because it will masquerade as spring, occasionally for hours at a time, only to rip off its mask with a sadistic laugh and spit icicles into every gullible face, behaviour that grows quickly old."

Tom Robbins

...I thought this quote was so funny and true...February masquerading as spring...giving us temperatures ABOVE freezing...and causing melt and slush everywhere...weather-wise it's been a crazy week around here...but no one is fooled - we know there's still a lot more winter left...

...it was 38 degrees...and yes that's my knitting pattern draped across the steering wheel...

...so everyone wanted to be outside...

...still cold enough for a stop at the cafe for cocoa and italian sodas though...

  1. At least you can enjoy it while it lasts. We have had several days of above freezing weather ( nights too) but expect more winter here too. That cocoa sounds good. MOM

What a fantastic find with that quote. It's so perfect. February sure has been masquerading in Boston with temps around 60 degrees F. Sheesh. As soon as I start loosening up and wearing my lighter clothes, it'll zap us with a cold day again.

  3. I love that quote! February can be dreary in so many parts of the country. I'm glad to say that in Alabama it's 77 degrees today : )

Great quote. It's been a balmy and sunny couple of days here in the South, but I'm a Yankee by birth and know exactly what you mean. Actually, it was April with its one-degree-above-freezing temperatures and non-stop freezing rain that always got to me (especially in college where I had to walk or bike everywhere).

  6. You made me laugh, having your knitting draped over your steering column- now that is a dedicated knitter.

  7. Oh I hope you enjoy the warmth while it lingers!! I admit I am dreading the onslaught of heat that is sure to come very soon, we usually skip spring and go straight to summer down here!

  8. You could be knitting at a red traffic light; I've been known to do that.
