Kumquat...To...Teapot...

...while we were in Grand Forks for the braces...we went to the Health Food store...we always do...it's a lot of fun...so many new and interesting and different things...

...this time in the organic produce section...they had Kumquats...it's the first time I've seen them...and I've never had them in my whole life...Scout was intrigued...and we had no idea what to use them for...so we just bought a handful...

...aren't they pretty little orange-y grape-y looking things...

...Wikipedia says that they are most often used in marmalades (we didn't buy enough for that) and in liqueurs - hmmmmnn - it also says that the rind is sweet and edible and the flesh is very sour and salty...Scout didn't think that sounded too promising...

...but we cut into one and gave it a try...kinda not so good...very sour...like a lemon...not sweet at all...

...so...we did what you do with lemons...made lemonade...No - not really...we put the little slices in our tea...cute little floating circles and a perfect use of the little kumquats...

  2. I have never had a kumquat either, but now will keep an eye out here for some. I would candy the peel just like you do for oranges and lemons.

I'm not sure I've ever had them either, but they look lovely :)

  4. There is a fruit called a loquat - in the same family . . . you can't really get them anywhere unless someone you know how has a tree. Growing up we had two huge loquat trees and they were so good, definitely sweet and tasty. However, they were 80% large seeds, lol!

Great use of your kumquats! Sometimes they are a little sweeter ;)

  5. Kumquat tea sounds fun. I never had any myself, but I like saying the word-kumquat.

  6. We tried kumquats for the first time recently too. Also not very impressed. You made much better use of them than we did!

  7. When we lived in a major metropolitan area, I used to love getting kumquats. To me, they're nature's equivalent of sweet'n'sour candies. My favorite part of eating them was the sweet rind after the sometimes sour, sometimes a little more on the sweet side inner flesh and juice. I had not ever thought of adding them to my tea, though.

  9. Kumquats are very cute. I first had them in a fab vegetarian restaurant, they were thinly sliced and in a fruit salad.

I haven't seen them for ages, I don't think they caught on.

  10. The only time I ever ate them, I was told to eat them whole, rinds and all. I liked them, but then, I like sour.

  11. :) We bought kumquats when our baby was the size of a kumquat--like at around five weeks! We ate them whole, and some were sweet and some were not. I liked them best sliced as a garnish for salads.

  12. I used to have a kumquat tree and they do get sweet when they are very ripe and soft on the tree. They sound good in tea, even if they're not sweet. :)

  14. I like kumquats! The trees grow pretty easily here. I don't eat them that much, but they sure do look pretty!
