...are you a Poe fan?...I loved his simple rhymes and meters when I was in Jr. High...and my Grandma loaned me a book of his stories and poems...I read them all...
...but you don't ever want to hear the tap, tap, tapping at your chamber door...no nevermore...HA!
...but we did hear it...and Scout went out and scared the rather large pileated woodpecker away from our wall...but he came back when we were not home...and did some serious damage...a silver dollar sized hole in the siding...
...so we borrowed a long ladder from our neighbors...we have the best neighbors on earth...
...and filled the hole with Great Stuff...but realized that he'd probably just come back and peck that out...
...so the Man said we should cover it with metal flashing...which we didn't have...
...but we did have a soda can...i.e., metal...
...so I trimmed off the ends just with a kitchen knife...
...and flattened out the strip of metal...
...cut it to size and sanded it just a bit...
...sprayed it with some leftover Fusion paint...
...I found an old can of brown oil paint in the garage...gave it a quick stir and it was still good...
...spounced some on the strip...
...not a perfect match...
...and fastened it over the foam-filled hole...
...so far we haven't heard any more tapping...
...Have you ever had a woodpecker tap, tap, tapping on your chamber door?

That is one exotic bird! It certainly made its mark on your house.
ReplyDeleteThis year our plum tree died and we cut it back to a shadow of its former self. The other day a lesser spotted woodpecker spent some five minutes examining every inch of it, tapping every now and then.
Poe, those films and stories that sent exciting chills down my teenage neck.
cool fix - hope he doesn't just take up residence somewhere else on the house! maybe he'll find a good tree instead! love, k
ReplyDeleteBrilliant solution!
