...visiting...

We've had such a good time visiting with my sweet sister and her hubby!...

...here are some of the highlights...

...we went driving around the North Dakota countryside...so that K&D could experience some of the 'Life in the Vast Lane'...

...we stopped at the little Jewish Cemetary...if you're interested in that part of the settling of America...

...a few years ago I read the story of Rachel Calof...and it was neat to see the list of settlers included some Calofs...

...then we stopped at the site of the Scandinavia Church - which donated some of the pews and windows to our current church...but you can see that the Church building no longer exists...

...only the bell and this monument remain...

...and although the Wikipedia site gives a very good description of the etymology of the word Scandinavia...I could find no reference anywhere to the use of Skandi Navia with the words separated and spelled with a K...

...we wandered around looking at the old graves...sadly...lots of children...

...on the way back we spotted one of the many many yellow headed blackbirds...and Karen wanted a picture but her camera wouldn't zoom far enough...especially after the bird flew further away from us...my picture is a little blurry too...sorry K...

...then we took Scout to the swamp...er..um...I mean swimming pool...the one with the green water...so that he could try out his new snorkel and mask that Karen brought him for his snorkeling merit badge at Scout camp later this summer...

...in he jumped to try it out...

...he did some climbing...

...and sliding too...

...I did a little bit of knitting on my first pair of knee highs...my Scout socks...

...then on to the Fort Totten State Historic Site...

...we take everyone there...it's so interesting...

...I loved this poem on the chalkboard...

Author: Unknown

Work while you work,
Play while you play,
This is the way
To be happy each day.

All that you do,
Do with your might,
Things done by half
Are never done right.

...and then right beside that:

If a task is once begun, never leave it till it's done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.

...of course Scout couldn't resist playing the piano...

...I loved all of the pictures and descriptions in the windows...as most of the buildings are not yet fixed up for viewing...

...it's nice to see a desciption of what the building was used for at different periods in the history of the fort...

...Scout looking at the buggies in the Carriage House...

...more descriptions...

...a very interesting Arithmetic device...

...I left this part large so that you could read it...

...in use...

...then we got such a nice tour of the Inn...now a functioning Bed and Breakfast...this is part of the kitchen...

...I especially loved this embroidered picture...with the same motto that hangs in my kitchen...

...we were all fascinated with the tin ceilings...

...wouldn't it be lovely to have breakfast here...

...there was an antique square piano in the parlor...amazing...

...and a gorgeous quilt depicting the square of buildings at Fort Totten...

...some pictures of the girls...who look very happy in the photo...although they probably were not in real life...having been forced to come here...so far from their families...

...a bunch of girls playing on the swing set...and a very crowded dormitory picture...

...and administrative building photo...but mostly a reflection of Scout and the sidewalk...

...looking back up the walk toward the Inn...

...the parade ground...

...and no tour would be complete without a trip to Sully's Hill...but this was about all the wildlife we were able to see...as the loop and the overlooks are closed due to flooding...

  1. What a fantastic place you live and the sites are amazing. I have a fondness for tin ceilings too and if they weren't so expensive I would have them in my home.

  2. What an interesting trip. I love going to "old" places. The poem and the quilt are awesome. The Swamp always cracks me up!
