Remember in this post - I mentioned that I had acquired some vintage fabric - so I've been sitting on this one for a long long time.
I needed some new grocery sacks. The ones I had been using forever were too small really and the poor baggers hated to see me coming. They were free and sturdy and if I could bag my own groceries I'd probably still be using them.
But I had all this pretty fabric...
...so I made a pattern out of one of the store's bags - so now the baggers will be able to slide my bags right on their rack and fill them normally...
Then I just cut out the material - seamed up the sides and turned under the edges - and then to make a flat bottom I pulled up the corner and stitched across that - and then laid it down on the bottom and stitched in the ditch to hold it in place.
Each bag took about 15 minutes from start to finish...
...and they're so pretty...
I hang them on the door after I've carried in the groceries - that way I won't forget to take them with me - and I just leave them in the car for when I need them. They're all really different. If I need a sturdy bag I take the pink one - it's really strong. The purple one is a little bit stretchy but still really strong. And the brown one is really stretchy if I have something that needs a little more room that's the one I grab. It also crumples up to nothing so I can just stick it in my Brea - so I always have at least one bag with me...

hey - those are neat - but can you really get all your groceries in 3 bags?? i seem to come out with 5 or 6 bags even if i only go in for a few items!! i guess yours are probably stronger and they can put more "stuff" in them.

Well - I usually can - I need to make a couple more bags for when I buy 'big groceries'.
ReplyDeleteThose bags are great. Much nicer than store ones. And I love the handle you used on your Brea bag - I am just going to use a plain black one that I'm cutting off a thrifted handbag.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nicola,
ReplyDeleteThat handle was a belt I got at the dollar store.
They are sure pretty! I used fabric shopping bags as well and I love it when the lady in the counter appreciates ur work. :) First visit here! Certainly be back for more!
