...as Southern as Grits...

...we had Grits for breakfast this morning...not Scout's favorite but he does eat them...and it reminds me of a funny story from his toddler years...

...Scout's Grandma (my sweet MIL) used to make him 'cheese grits'...and he loved them...and he would ask for 'cheese grits' for a snack...

...so I made regular cheese grits for him one day - put him in his high chair and gave him his toddler spoon and bowl - he took one bite and made an awful face and said 'no like sandy grits'...

...I had no idea what was wrong - the grits were well cooked and plenty cheese-y - so I gave my disappointed boy some graham crackers or some such thing...

...then the next time I was talking to my MIL I happened to ask her about the grits...and she laughed and said that what she really makes for grits is Cream of Wheat mixed with some cheese...i.e., not 'sandy grits'...I told her the story and we had a good laugh over it...

...I love grits...and my favorite way to eat them is with a puddle of Earth Balance on top...I scoop up some grits making sure that I get a little bit of the creamy Earth Balance with each spoonful...I never stir the EB into the grits...

...so how do you eat your grits?...

  1. I know that you're a vegan, but I cook mine for about 20 minutes and then pour evaporated milk in the center and cook about 20 minutes longer. My husband and sons like lots of cheese with it; I just like a little salt and pepper. Yum!

  3. My husband brought back grits from America - he spent a lot of time there with his job.

I think it is one of those things you grow up with. What country doesn't have food no-one else understands!

  4. Ooh, I used to have cheesy grits every year at Christmas, someone in the family made them for our Christmas eve potluck every year. We were doing some experimenting with cream of wheat some time last year, quite different, but still thought they were pretty good!

  5. I love my grits with milk and sugar. It sounds awful, I know, but that's how Mom and Daddy liked them when I was a child and that's how I like them now.

  6. I was not raised in the south and the concept of grits was not in my life as a child. We had Farina (Cream of Wheat) which is not something I can eat any longer since I'm GF. I did, however, grow up with polenta and since that is the closest thing, I enjoy my polenta with tomato and basil sauce! :-)

  7. I love grits. I know you are vegan. I don't mean to offend or anything with my list. We sometimes eat it with fish, or with a sprinkling of bacon or ham. I also just eat them with cheese or plain with butter and a little bit of white pepper and salt.

  9. I have never had grist, just cream of wheat. I do love cream of wheat with unholy amounts of sugar.

  10. This made me laugh, because I am not from the South, and grits is one thing I have never gotten used to... I always tell my husband, "they taste like sand!" Ha ha!
