...this is one of those recipes that I've had 'saved' as a draft post for almost a year...
...so see...I really do need all of those...
...and these really are ready in about an hour...and they reminded me a little bit of Mom's Angel Biscuits...but not quite as fluffy...more like the Dinner Roll...as they are so named...
...gather your ingredients if you're a mis en place cook like me...and mix your yeast with the water...
...add your warmed soymilk/sugar/salt/Earth Balance mixture...and then I used 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour...just 'cause...
...then 2 1/2 cups of regular bread flour...
...mix that all up and you'll have a pretty sticky dough...
...put it in a warm place for about 15 minutes...at my house that's inside the oven with the light on...it seems to be the perfect temperature for raising bread...
...it will be pretty fluffy when it comes out...
...turn it out onto a floured surface...i.e., the countertop...
...pat to a one inch thickness...
...the recipe says to cut into circles...but I just sliced up the rectangle into squares...
...then the recipe says to fold them over bits of butter (Earth Balance)...but I just melted some Earth Balance and then poured it onto the baking sheet...
...and then placed each roll in the melted EB and then turned it over...
...and then put them in a warm place to rise again for about 15 minutes...
...I couldn't put them back in the oven with the light on as now the oven is preheating...so I just put them at the back of the stove near the oven vent...
...and they rose up quite nicely...
...then bake...the recipe says 10 minutes...but it was probably 15 before the tops were nice and golden...
...they turned out very pretty...and what could be better than fresh hot bread with dinner?...
...delicious with some roast chick'n seitan...
...we often have a big dinner on Sunday...and this was almost like a holiday dinner with fresh hot rolls...
...the only thing I'd do differently is to add maybe a fourth teaspoon more salt...just my taste though...
This is the original recipe for One Hour Dinner Rolls...my changes are in italics...
Ingredients
• 2 tsp yeast
• ¼ cup of lukewarm water
• 1¼ cup of milk...I used homemade soymilk...
• 3 tablespoons of sugar
• ½ teaspoon of salt
• 4 tablespoons of butter...I used Earth Balance
• 3 cups of flour - I used 1/2 cup whole wheat and 2 1/2 cups bread flour
Instructions
1. Dissolve yeast in water.
2. Milk, sugar, salt, and EB should be put into a pan over the oven and heated to lukewarm...I just microwaved mine until it was lukewarm...and then add to the yeast and water...
3. Add yeast and flour and stir until blended.
4. Put in a warm place for 15 minutes.
5. Turn out on a floured board and press to 1 inch thickness.
6. Cut out circles....I just cut the patted out rectangle into squares...
7. Fold dough over bits of Earth Balance...I just melted the Earth Balance and then placed the dough on it and then turned it over to 'butter' both sides...
8. Let rise 15 minutes and bake 10 minutes at a 350 degree oven.

Nice! Fresh bread, of any sort, is always a winner for me. I made a Mennonite Quick Roll once that seems similar, in a couple ways. I like your charming flour container!
ReplyDeletethose are just lovely!!!!
