...Right on the heels of our vacation...
...and right after church - we tried to find a shady spot to watch the parade...we succeeded - sort of...
...then we kept waiting and waiting...for a parade that was late...
...but finally got underway...
...so the candy throwing...and grabbing could begin...
...it was just your typical midwestern small town parade - with lots of farm equipment...flags...horses...and bands - thankfully no Boy Scouts this year...
...then we headed back home - where the crowd had begun to gather...I think we counted 26 people this year...
...and the food and fun began in earnest...
...and the fireworks start small...
...but go on for several hours...
...even if they're not crowd pleasers - they're boy-pleasers for sure...
...then there was a little more Birthday fun...
...with friends who had not seen Scout since he turned 12...
...next the grown-ups (which sort of includes me) get involved with some of the heavier artillery...
...and fire off some rockets that contain parachutes...
...it's so much fun to watch the kids run after and catch the parachutes...such joy...
...and the amazing thing is that they ALL always manage to catch at least a few - hopefully some of the bigger ones are watching out for the littles and making sure they do - they are so proud of their booty...
...as dusk falls - the sparklers come out...
...then another vegan birthday cake is consumed...
...after dark (about 11:00 PM here) the 'real' fireworks begin...
...the city outdid themselves this year...
...it was definitely the best show of the 6 we've seen here...
...finally before everyone left - Scout had to show his crazy coloured fire to everyone...
...and so another Independence Day comes to a close...

How lovely, what a special day for everyone. Do you think that smaller communities do these things better? It does seem more personal and meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI'm fascinated to know why it is good that there were no boyscouts in the parade!
