...W.I.P. Wednesday...

...my neighbor's baby blanket...progress so far...2 stripes...

...I'm thinking I'll omit the peach stripe that I'd sort of planned on...and go directly to pink and make a smaller blanket...mainly because I just wanted a receiving blanket size...and if I add the peach stripe it'll be more of a crib sized blanket...and then there was a problem finding the right shade of light peach...they were all a bit to melon-y for my taste and to go with the yellow and pink I thought it needed to be a really soft light peach...which I couldn't find...

...and if I get the pink stripe done by next Wednesday...I'll have plenty of time to make a little Super Simple One Hour Baby Hat...that just takes an hour anyway...I could theoretically do it the morning of the shower...

...so basically the pattern is:

Seed Stitch Border Baby Blanket

Cast on 117 stitches.

Work in Seed Stitch (K1 P1) across for 12 rows.

Then for the Stockinette Stitch Center:

Row 1: Seed Stitch (K1 P1) - 8 stitches - Knit 101 stitches - Seed Stitch (P1, K1) 8 stitches.

Row 2: Seed Stitch (K1, P1) - 8 stitches - Purl 101 stitches - Seed Stitch (P1, K1) 8 stitches.

First colour change Cream to Yellow at Row 64 - (52 rows Stockinette Stitch).

Then Continuing in pattern Change to pink at Row 128 - (64 rows Yellow).

Work 52 rows in pattern of Pink.

then work 12 rows of Seed Stitch in Pink.

...This pattern is so simple...I can imagine it in all sorts of colour combinations...and I can knit it in the car or the theatre...when watching TV too...(just ignore the fact that I managed to drop a stitch before...haha)...

  2. I am knitting a similar blanket. I didn't know that the amount of stitches done on the ends doesn't have to be the same as the rows coming up. As yours is 12 rows seed and then with 8 on each side. Is there any rule about this? I would appreciate any help.

    1. Hi Alma,

...it's nice to 'meet' you...thanks for stopping by Affectioknit...I'm so glad you're making the baby blanket...not sure there's a rule about the border...but because you want them to be fairly even...top and bottom and on the sides...you'll need your gauge...so if your rise/run is 3/4...you'd have 9 on the sides and 12 on the bottom...my gauge wasn't quite that even...hence 8/12...but do let me know if this is confusing...

      Have a lovely day!

    1. Hi Melissa,
Thanks for stopping by Affectioknit...all you will need to do is start at the bottom with the second color and knit the seed stitch border across all stitches...then when you get to the sides...continue in seed stitch-second-color for 8 stitches...then tie on your main color for the stockinette portion of the blanket and knit across to last 8 stitches...then tie on the second color again...and knit those 8 stitches...

...then turn to the purl side...and knit the first 8 stitches in seed stitch...then pick up the main color from underneath the second color ...kind of twisting the yarns together...and purl across the center stitches...then again...pick up the second color from underneath the main color and continue in seed stitch...

...the only trick is to change colors by picking up the new color from underneath...so that you don't end up with any holes...

      ...I hope that helps...Good luck...

  5. Hello: I would appreciate some help. I am making a white Christening blanket with a seed stitch border. I cast on 99 stitches on size 10 straight needles and I have completed the first 12 rows with the seed stitch. On the next row, which will have a seed border at each end of the row, with stockinette in the middle, the seed stitch does not look like a seed stitch. I was doing 10 seed stitches at the beginning and end of the row...and the side
borders look very odd not like the seed stitch. I have ripped this out twice now and would like to know how to successfully do the seed stitch border at beginning and end of the row. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    1. Hi and thanks for stopping by Affectioknit...
...so sorry you're having problems with the pattern...I think I would put a marker at the beginning and end of the stockinette stitch center...that way you'll be really aware of the change to seed stitch...and then look closely at the stitch right before the marker...if the bump in on the side facing you - then you'll want to knit that stitch...if the bump is on the side facing away from you then you'll want to purl that stitch to continue the seed stitch pattern...
...I hope that helps...but let me know if you're still having a problem and I'll do a mock up and send you some close up photos... :)

  6. This pattern appear to be wrong for the side borders?? Doing the seed stitch with an even number of 8 on the sides results in a rib stitch, not the seed stitch. You need an odd number on side borders to get the seed stitch. If doing 8 stitches As the pattern says, you would have to alternate rows of K1, P1 and P1, K1. I have had to rip this out about 10 times before I figured it out!!!

  7. Hi Amhersh,

...sorry but the Seed Stitch is Row 1 (K1, P1) for the first and last 8 stitches and then Row 2 is also (K1, P1) across those same 8 stitches...this reverses the little bump from front to back...you're right about k1, p1 followed by p1, k1 making a ribbed stitch...in this pattern only the center stitches of the blanket alternate rows knit one row and then purl one row making the smooth front stockinette stitch...I have updated the pattern to show the seed stitch at the beginning and end of each row...please let me know if you don't understand and we can chat some more...
