That's where we were last night! ...can't see me? - I'm under the big yellow arrow... We had so much fun - if you get a chance to see Lorie Line - you should definitely go - this concert was just like you were sitting in her living room and she was playing with a group of friends and telling stories...
One of the 'Fab Five' took the photo of the audience - it was so much fun!
Y'all know the Man-Cub goes to Middle School in the fall and has the opportunity to participate in band. Guess which instrument he chose - Robert would be proud. The Man did a lot of research on trumpets and decided that the Conn Trumpets made before 1964 were the best ones out there. So he searched online and found a musical instrument dealer with a perfect 1961 model - no dents or scratches and it's case is intact too. I'll post some closeups later - the case doesn't even 'smell' old - if you know what I mean... He's had one lesson with his instructor so far - he gives private lessons over the summer - much better than our old 'Summer Band'. The Man-Cub is doing really well - he can already play 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' and the 'Song of the Fjords' - as well and the first scale - C Major. He keeps trying and he likes to practice a lot - Jack doesn't like it 'though...
Our local Concert Association met last night - so we went to see this: We were sort of fooled by the program cover (not my photo) - we (the Man-Cub especially) thought that it would be a performance of the Phantom of the Opera... ...but it was really a sort of Broadway review with only 3 songs from the Phantom and those at the very end of the program. The program was very good and the Man-Cub was the best behaved (read only) 9 year old there...
Have you seen this video - it's amazing - and it's in French!!!
The Lyrics...and my poor (I'm sure) translation - but you'll get the general idea anyway...
LES PEAUX DE LIèVRES (Hare's Skins - YUCK - this has got to be some sort of idiom for big snowflakes - I know I'm vegan and all - but there's nothing else here about hares...)
T'as les joues rouge boréale You have boreal red cheeks
Tes couettes noires virent au blanc comme l'asphalte Y tombe des peaux d'lièvres sur Montréal Your black feather beds change to white like the asphalt where the hare's skins fall on Montreal (see this would be much prettier if we said 'big snowflakes' instead of hare's skins - I've just never heard that idiom...)
On s'éclipse du party La neige crisse sous nos pieds Les flocons dansent doucement Dans le vent
It eclipses the party (or we eclipse ourselves from the party??) snow grates under our feet the flakes dance gently In the wind
Mais c'pas la faute du temps Si j'frissonne Et nos mains se repèrent Et nos coeurs s'accelèrent
But it's not the fault of time If I shiver And our hands seek each other And our hearts beat faster
On s'dit rien et pourtant On s'comprend C'est mes premiers murmures De l'hiver
We say nothing and yet we understand each other These are my first murmurs Of winter
Le désir nous harcèle On court par les ruelles Ça fait tellement longtemps qu'on s'attend La nuit s'annonce si chaude et si belle
Desire besets us We run through the lanes It makes such a long time that we wait for (the night) The night announces itself so hot and so beautiful T'as les joues rouge boréale Tes couettes noires virent au blanc comme l'asphalte Y tombe des peaux d'lièvres sur Montréal
The group is called Tricot Machine (Knitting Machine) and they're from Montreal...
I'm playing again in a couple of weeks. The hymns don't worry me - but because it's Lent all of the liturgical music changes - ARGH! I'm off to practice...
I managed to muddle through with the organ on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter morning. We had seven hymns Easter - plus all the liturgy - Whew - I'm glad that's over... This is also the only picture of the skirt and top. I'll have to get a better one...
I was tickled that the Man-Cub wrote this on a school assignment - he was supposed to describe his house - and of all the things he could have written - he chose to say that his house has a piano. That would probably be one of the first things I would list about my house as well...
Guess what was delivered at 9:00 this morning? A Cable-Nelson upright piano. I've been playing it just about ever since it got here - but I had to come and do a quick post about it - I love it so. So now I know what the Man was sneaking around talking on the phone about.
The bench is from the Kohler & Campbell piano that I played when I was growing up. Thanks to Mom and Karen for sending that to me. I don't think they had any idea that it would be paired with a new piano.
The piano is used and has all of the dates of service penciled in under the top. When I find out more about it's history, I'll post about that. It has a nice tone 'though and some light wear on the keys. I can't wait to give the Man-Cub his lesson on it this afternoon.
