...10.15...Madame Alexander Hair Reroot Progress Report...

...I'm just plugging away...haha...on the hair rerooting project...
...after I've done a couple of 'rows' I braid that portion...just so it won't get tangled...

...I've done a few rows up from the base where you last saw her...and the hair is nice and soft...and you can definitely see the variation in colour as you work...some plugs will be almost entirely black and others brown or reddish brown...it's very pretty hair...
...it's going really well...I don't spend too much time on it...as there's no rush at all...it's an easy and pretty mindless project...but you can't really watch tv or anything while doing it...as you definitely have to aim the tool...

...but I'm really happy with how it's turning out...and I can just imagine how pretty she'll be with all her hair back...

...10.14...What I Ate in a Day...as a Vegan...

...so this was one of those days with two breakfasts...haha...first was a bowl of cereal with almond milk...
...for some reason we have two different bowls of leftover grits in the fridge...one yellow and one white...so I'm going to use both of those up...tonight's garbage night...so we're cleaning out the fridge...haha...
...so lunch was a clean out the leftovers affair...that's the bowl of leftover white grits...and a jar of leftover lentils...a little bit of sauerkraut on the lid from the grits (why dirty up another dish...right?)...and then a plate full of Foreman grilled veggies...
...in the afternoon...I made a batch of vegan nacho cheese sauce which we had with some tortilla chips...but apparently did not take a photo of that...
...and then...dinner was a pretty typical plate of BBQ tofu...salad...french bread...and that warm potato 'salad' that I make with tomato and ranch dressing over a baked potato...

...what did you eat yesterday?...

...10.13...W.I.P. Wednesday...

...well...while the re-knitting of the back of the Japan cardigan continues...
...I thought I'd share this sweet little F.O. with you...
...it's Purl Soho's Soft Cotton Washcloth...I've just folded it diagonally here to make sure it's square...
...added the little I-cord tab for hanging...
...and it's done...this is the waffle-y scrubby side...
...and this is the soft smooth side...
...I'm really happy with how it turned out...I prefer the soft side against my skin...
...but I think the scrubby side is prettier...

...what's in your workbasket?...

...10.12...Tuesdays with Julia...

...we made Vegan Pièce de Boeuf à la Cuillère or Vegan Minced Braised Beef Served in a Beef Shell...

...it's one of those funny old 60s recipes...that end up very pretty...like you'd serve at a fancy dinner party...if people even had those anymore...

...and as usual...there are a lot of steps ...
...you start out by making a 'shell' with your seitan roast...
...and then you fill it with mince...bread it and bake it...
...and it really is very pretty...
...and it was just as tasty as it was pretty...if it didn't take so long...I'd make it again...haha...

...and all of the particulars are over at The Vegan Version...

...10.11...Over the Weekend...

...we started the weekend with a big breakfast...I made a batch of Sam's egg dipping sauce...
...and used my little egg forms to make some vegan soft boiled eggs...
...and we had that with toast...
...it was a perfect start...
...I picked up the weekly instacart order...
...pretty usual fare...
...and then...I was truckin' along with the Japan cardigan...the ribbing was all done...
...and my gauge was matching the pattern pretty perfectly...
...and then...while we were sitting around knitting and watching tv...a TRAGEDY occurred...you can see it here in this photo...that weird strip of knitting across the center back...

...well...what happened was...I got up from my recliner...and poked my knitting down into my knitting bag beside my chair...only necessary because Kitten will immediately pounce on any knitting left on chair or sofa...and when I got back...as I was sitting down...I reached into the bag to retrieve my knitting...and somehow...I don't think this has ever happened before...I pulled the working needle completely out of the knitting...arghhh!!!

...now...I do know how to pick up stitches properly...but do you think that's what I did...got under a good light...and really focused on picking up the stitches in the correct facing order and without splitting any thread...well...no...hence the tragedy...

...I hastily picked up the stitches in the lamplight of the den...and continued knitting...
...so then...in the clear light of day...and many rows further on...I was not happy with that decision at all...I'm perfectly ok with people asking me if my garment is handknit...but not because they can see an obvious mistake...
...and I also found a split stitch much further back that I'm not happpy with either...although I could probably pull that through to the inside and tack it down...
...so...of course I've frogged back to maybe 10 or so rows above the ribbing and am once again moving forward...and I wound the yarn back into a pullout skein...

...onwards...
...and then in the evening...the Man wanted to make an authentic Viennese strudel...we were talking about Shilos the restaurant in San Antonio that the Man liked so well...and he had tried a German apple strudel there...so he peeled and sliced the apples...
...and I browned some breadcrumbs in Earth Balance...
...he chopped some walnuts...
...and I soaked some raisins in brandy...cognac actually...I don't have any brandy...
...measured out the sugar and cinnamon...there's only 2 tablespoons...so it's not very sweet...
...we're using this vegan filo pastry from the freezer...
...and this recipe...the only substitution is Earth Balance for the butter...
...I finished toasting the breadcrumbs and separated those...
...and then we read the recipe more carefully and realize that the raisins are supposed to soak for 2 hours...haha...so we fired up the grill and made veggie burgers while we waited...
and then after we'd had our supper...we continued with the recipe...brushing each layer of filo with melted Earth Balance and sprinkle with the breadcrumbs...
...then mix all the other ingredients together...and spread it out on one edge of the pastry...
...roll them up using a towel...and brush with more melted Earth Balance...
...here they are ready for the oven...
...and nicely browned and crisp...just out of the oven...
...sprinkled with some powdered sugar...
...this is my very first time tasting Viennese Strudel...and I thought it was delicious...I think I may try the recipe again...and just use pie crust instead of filo pastry...

...have you ever had strudel?...did you make it yourself?...

...10.9...Dinner and a Movie...

...I've been making the vegan B.L.T salad a lot lately...it's just lettuce...tomato...a cubed slice of toast...sometimes two...a handful of TVP ham or bacon...and a generous dollop of vegan mayo...it's so delicious...and can be a meal in itself...
...but the Man fired up the grill and made grilled tofu...with his special sauce...it was actually a little too spicy for me...(I do know I'm a wimp)...steamed broccoli and a stewed potato on the side...

...and it was my turn to choose the movie...and it was Séraphine...it's the true story of Séraphine de Senlis (Séraphine Louis), a French cleaning woman who became a gifted painter and then descended into madness...it was also a lot about Wilhelm Uhde who discovered her 'art' by chance...I thought it was good...I would call it a pretty 'deep' film...definitely about 'art' and how it is perceived...but also about our flawed humanity...and how talent is rewarded...

...not sure the Man liked it very much...it was subtitled (of course)...and not really his genre...haha...

...10.8...Friday Favorites...

...remember a few years ago...when I put the little tabs on my under-sink garbage can...to hold the plastic grocery bags in place...and I mentioned later that I've stopped using the plastic ones entirely...
...so my new garbage bag solution is the paper ones that our InstaCart orders come in...you can go here and here to see what I did with my stash of plastic bags...haha...

...I just tear down each corner a couple of inches and fold it over...
...and that shortened bag fits neatly in my trashcan...
...and when it's full...I staple it closed...
...and carry it neatly out to the bin...since we compost most of our gross stuff...the paper bags work well for us...

...and the paper sacs are much more eco-friendly...of course re-usable bags are best...but you can't use those at all during a pandemic...even if you're doing your own shopping...
