...How to FIX frizzy tangled doll's hair...

...my sweet sissie gave me this prayer doll years ago...in one of her care packages she sent me...and I put her away in a storage bin...for the day when I'd have a little granddaughter to give her too...

...I searched the blog but can't find any reference to it...which seems really...really strange...

...and her hair hasn't been touched since then...

...it looks like it's been braided...and since I wasn't sure what her hair was supposed to look like...
...I searched the interwebs for "prayer doll"...and I think I've found an original of the same doll...
...and her beautiful long golden locks are curled in pretty ringlets...
...and judging by her pretty white dress...she's probably intended as a first communion present...
...so to start the detangling process...you'll need a big pot of gently simmering (not boiling) water...and just dip the dolls head in...the heat and water relax the hair...
...and you'll probably be able to get a wide toothed comb through it...I also sprayed her hair wtih a detangling solution...
...so here she is...nicely de-tangled...
...then wrap the hair tightly onto curlers if you want curly hair...if you want it straight just let it dry natually...and if you want it braided, then braid it while it is still wet...
...once you have the hair set the way you want it...dunk it back into the steamy water...
...for about a minute or so...you want to heat the hair back up in it's 'set'...so if I wanted it braided...I'd braid it and then dunk it back in the hot water braided...
...and that's really all there is to it...
...I set her on the counter in the bathroom to dry completely...
...and then I took the curlers out...
...I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out...
...I just combed the little ringlets around my finger...it's quite pretty and soft and curly and it smells nice too...from the detangler I guess...

...of course I'm going to dress her up for my little granddaughter...

...W.I.P. Wednesday...

...this little project comes with quite a long history...

...many (many, many) years ago...when I was about 8 or 9 years old...I was in 4-H...if you're not familiar with it...it's a youth organization...and I loved it...we knew the leader quite well...she and her sweet family went to our Church and lived across the river from us...

...anywhoo...one summer about that time...we had a 'crafty' meeting and I received this kit...
...exactly like this one...I know...the internet is amazing...
...I did a search for "little girl Amen embroidery"...and found this...

...I was so amazed...it's exactly what I remember...
...and apparently there was a "little boy Amen" version as well...
...so...back to the story...

...that summer when I got home with my kit...I remember taking a chair out into the yard and separating the threads and reading the chart...

...but having absolutely no experience reading embroidery charts...and apparently being too stubborn to ask for any help...

...I resolutely started embroidering...but I mistakenly read the "x" on the chart and started embroidering the border in dk pink...obviously thinking I was soooo smart...

...now the pattern's cover photo was (and still is) in black and white...and a colour photo would have been quite helpful...

...but I had separated my threads and embroidered to the end of one and then another...but because there was not that much dk pink in the 'real' pattern...I quickly ran out of thread...

...so then I did seek guidance from my Mom...and she was so sympathetic...you see I should have been using dk aqua for the border...and there was, of course, plenty of dk aqua thread for the border...but my sweet Mama seeing how much work I had done already...and seeing the tears welling up in my eyes...sweetly offered to get more pink thread to let me finish the border in pink...

...tears were actually shed...and I was so very frustrated...Mom explained how the chart worked...and I realized then that there were actually x's all over the printed linen...not just in the border...I had thought that the symbol on the chart would change on the linen to match the chart...and in my haste to start the project had not really looked at the rest of the printed linen...if I had...of course I would have realized might have realized that the x on the chart did not correspond to an x on the linen...

...well...I'm sorry to say...that I never finished the project...in any colour...
...but thanks to the miracle of the internet...I am able to complete one for my granddaughter...
...it's really a simple little project...accomplished a thread at a time...
...completed...washed and blocked...
...pressed from the back with a damp cloth...
...I'm by no means a master of embroidery...the back of my work is definitely not presentable...
...but the front turned out very sweet...
...sorry I didn't get a better photo of it framed...I'll get one later when it's on the wall of a sweet little girl's nursery...

...and that's the end of the story...

...also...Over the Weekend...

...I got up early and did the weekly shopping so I'd be finished well before the shower started...
...adorable little baby eggplanst...and I bought tomatoes before I knew what was coming later...haha...
...I got a super duper deal on dried cranberries...that's right 45¢...crazy right...so I'm thinking cranberry scones are in order...
...and it's pumpkin spice time once again...so I thought I'd try Silk's new flavor...
...the only other thing of note...is this new to us ancient grain...fonio...have you ever heard of it?...
...I turned most of the bag of organic apples into applesauce...
...we just love homemade applesauce...and surprisingly galas make good applesauce...
...see what I mean...I didn't need to buy tomatoes...haha...we received two different batches from our gardening friends...so YAY!...
...so I saved some perfect ones for eating fresh...
...well washed...
...and dunked in simmering water for a few seconds...
...for some reason...it's just so satisfying to slip those skins off...
...the skinned tomatoes filled up my biggest bowl...
...so I smashed them and had just enough to fill three quart jars...just a little scoopful left over...
...cooling on the counter...
...it must have worn Jack out...he took a long nap...oblivious to everything...
...Kitten came for a visit...look how fat she is...she's napping too...still upside down with her feet in the air...it's so fun to have her in the house for a bit...
...Jack got up from his nap on the couch...and went outside and took another one...

...Baby Shower...

...well...y'all already know that we had a Baby Shower over the weekend...
...so I ironed some used tissue paper...a frugal tip I learned from my frugal mama...
...and packed up my gift bag...
...and headed over to the Fellowship Hall...early...
...to put the finishing touches on everything...
...the cake and cupcakes were so pretty...
...isn't that cake adorable...?
...Our Airman was with us in spirit...and on Facetime...the little button on his photo says "Proud Dad"...
...we had these sweet cards for some motherly advice...and a sweet guess about the baby...
...and then The Airman's Wife got busy opening a BUNCH of presents...
...I'll be sharing what was in our gift bag this week...

~Wishing you a lovely start to your week!
