...Saving Cilantro...

...yesterday...I went by the Latino Market...I don't go every week...because it's kinda out of the way...but whenever I have to go to Lowes...I stop by there...

...and I got some green onions...some roma tomatoes...a perfectly ripe avocado...I really have much better luck finding ripe ones here than at the regular grocery store...where they are either too hard or too soft...

...and TWO bunches of fresh cilantro for 50¢ each...

...I know fresh cilantro is controversial...but we love it here...I like to add it to soups and stews...and to store-bought salsa too...it just makes it taste so fresh...
...but it wilts and goes bad pretty quickly...so I chop the stems and some of the leaves in the food processor...
...and then I roughly chop some of the leaves/tops...
...and pack it into my mini muffin pan...first the processed bits...
...and then some of the leaves on top...
...pour over a little bit of water to hold it all together...
...and pop it in the freezer...and out pops these little cubes of cilantro goodness...
...I put them into a baggie and I can pull out some 'fresh' cilantro any time I want it...

...do you like cilantro?...

~Have a lovely day!

  1. We call it coriander - lots available here both cut and growing. We love the taste as well, a 'clean' taste.

  2. We need so little cilantro here at one time that it is good to freeze ahead. I happen to love cilantro but most others I know don't like it much.

    Why is fresh cilantro controversial?

  3. yes!! i love cilantro!!! duane doesn't....it's definitely a taste that either you like it or hate it.

i freeze it too - mostly just throw the flimsy produce bag in the freezer - then, after it's well frozen, i crush it. as needed, i just scoop out a few spoonfuls. your method looks good too.

    love, k
