...a Homeopathy Newbie...

...that would be me...

...I mentioned in my last post (sorry I skipped Saturday...I was mostly just resting...the only thing of consequence that I did at all was to paint another coat of poly on the stair rails...and you've already seen that)...that we all had bad colds...

...I don't know about you...but my colds normally follow the same progression...always starting with a sore throat on day one...then on day two, I lose my voice...then I'm all stuffy headed for a few days (let's say 3, 4 & 5)...then I get a cough...and this can last another few days (maybe 6-10)...or it can settle in my chest and last for weeks...

...and,I've had pneumonia three times in my life...so I know enough to be careful with a cold...

...anywhoooo...

...on Thursday I woke up with a really bad sore throat...so I went to the pharmacy to get some aspirin and ibuprofen and drops...we tend to treat our symptoms individually and not use multi-symptom products...and on the shelf beside the cough drops were a couple of products I'd not seen before...Umcka...and I thought...'what a strange name'...(seriously)...

...so I picked up the bottle and read what they had to say...basically that it shortens the duration of a cold...and knowing what I was in for...I thought that sounded pretty good...so I bought it...

...when I got home...I did a little bit of research on the active ingredient...Pelargonium Sidoides...and found some studies about it's efficacy...

...and started the regime...which is just to take a teaspoonful three times a day...and it tastes good...so that was easy...
...the first thing I noticed was that I didn't lose my voice...even though the sore throat had been really bad...and then I did get a sniffle and a little bit of a stuffy head...but really...nothing like past colds that I've had...and I hardly had a cough at all...after the ibuprofen and aspirin that I took for the sore throat...the only other medication that I've taken was a benydryl tablet Thursday night before bed...

...here it is Monday morning...and the cold that started with a sore throat on Thursday is pretty much gone...(5 days)...amazing...

...so my first homeopathy experience has been a good one...and I'll definitely be using Pelargonium Sidoides the next time I have a cold...I'll let you know the results then too...

...disclaimer...Umcka...does not know that I exist and I purchased my own bottle of Umcka and was not compensated in any way...(other than with a shorter-milder cold)... ;)

...so have you ever tried a homeopathic remedy?...

...wishing you a lovely start to your week!

  1. I hope you are 100% better soon! I don't get sick very often, so I haven't tried many home remedies. However, when I sometimes get struck by allergies, I use a netti pot. I love it!

  2. I've never heard of this but I shall get some in just in case. I also treat each symptom rather than the all in ones.

  3. I'm a devotee of Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat tea. It doesn't solve any of the problems, but it treats symptoms and makes being sick more manageable without the fog that comes from pharmaceuticals.

My college chaplain introduced me to it during a raging summer cold/flu I had my 2nd year of undegrad and it saved me many times since, when bed rest was not an option. Made it in a commuter mug and it pulled me through my day :)

PS: Sorry about the summer cold.... they are the worst! So glad you are feeling better!

    Thanks Kristina,

I'm going to look for that tea the next time at the Health Food store...I bet I'll have a good experience with it too...and if I have it already on hand...I'll be ready at the first sign of a sore throat...I'm such a good scout...(prepared I mean)...

    Have a lovely day!

  6. I'm loving this knowledge! I worry I'll catch the girls little colds because they always turn into a lost voice and bronchitis for me. Awesome! Thanks for sharing. My Stepmother is a healer, so she has all sorts of recommendations. Her suggestions usually work.

P.S. Throat Coat is also good for those with intestinal problems.
