...Scout's 2014 Ornament...

...when we were up at Mom's over Thanksgiving...my sweet sissie and I were looking at Blogger...and she was amazed at my draft posts section...

...right now I have 76 drafts...but only a few of those are actual posts that I'm saving...the vast majority are saved recipes...I cut and paste the url of a recipe I want to try into a draft blog post...and then...when I do get around to trying it...I don't have to go searching for the link to share with y'all...so...now you know...

...but that is not the case with this post...it has truly been languishing in my drafts for a year...so you'll see our old kitchen in WV in the photos...

...every year we give Scout a new ornament...if it's not already dated...then I write the date on it somewhere...in the beginning we usually went to a Hallmark store and bought an ornament reflecting a stage in his young life...or some interest of his...like...oh, say...trains...then as he got older we often included him in the choice of the ornament...so a few of them are just plain old off the shelf ornaments that he picked...and I dated...and then for the years we were at Peace...he also got a Peace ornament for each year...so he has about 30 ornaments in his box...and he'll take those with him when he sets up housekeeping on his own...

...anywhooo...I saved this post because I wanted to show you the ornament from last year...but obviously couldn't show it to you before I gave it to Scout because (on the off chance that he looked at the blog...he doesn't always...but sometimes he'll mention something he's seen there)...I didn't want him to see it before he opened the present...and then after Christmas...it seemed kinda silly to post about a Christmas Ornament...

...I followed the instructions at The Ornament Girl...she has the most amazing ornaments...so go check it out...
...I gathered my supplies...Pledge Floor Finish...Glitter and some clear glass ornaments...
...put a little squirt of floor finish inside the glass ball...the empty water bottle is there to pour the extra finish into...
...gave the ball a little swirl to coat the inside...and poured the excess into the bottle...
...poured a generous amount of glitter into the ball...
...and gave it another swirl to coat the wet inside with glitter...
...super easy and not too messy...
...I did a couple more...and put them on skewers to dry...
...then...because Scout loves Tim Burton's The Nightmare before Christmas...actually we all do...it's a sweet story if you've not seen it...

...I thought I'd paint Jack Skellington on one of the ornaments...
...it was super easy...especially with the paint pens...pretty much just a white circle with a little neck...and then I outlined it with the black paint pen and drew his sweet little face...
...Scout loved it...
...oh...and I put 2014 on the back...

...do you prefer to buy your ornaments or make your own?...

~Have a lovely day!

  1. What a lovely story. I wish I had done something similar for my children as they grew up although I do have ornaments that they made at school and they come out each year.

  2. That's neat! Plus, I guess he could use them twice a year...pull them out for Halloween too! Love, K
