...the Niña and the Pinta...

...we headed down to the Riverwalk bright and early Saturday morning to see the Niña and the Pinta...the Santa Maria wasn't there...
...a barge was slowly, silently and gracefully making her way up river...I just never tire of seeing barges for some reason...
...it was a beautiful fall day...and the river was like glass...
...as we made our way toward the moored ships...
...we toured the Pinta first...isn't it funny how you always say names in a certain order though...we always say/hear the Niña and the Pinta...but the Niña is the smaller vessel...
...the masts...
...a small wooden barrel...for vino...of course...
...an amazing knot of rope...
...the bow...I love all of the names of the parts of ships...did you know the word for bow comes from an old English word for the shoulders of an animal...i.e., the shoulder of the ship...
...this is the port side...which of course comes from the side they usually docked...and starboard...is from the side on which a vessel was steered...the steering board...so it's kinda backwards here...as this ship is moored on the starboard side...
...a friendly mallard...port-side...
...a description of the Pinta...
...and photos of the below deck area...we weren't allowed to go down there...
...it looks pretty modern though...
...the history of the original Pinta...
...the poop deck which forms the roof of a cabin built in the aft...
...the ship's boat...
...interesting...
...sails and masts...
...some people in period costume...
...pretty...
...now on to the Niña...
...so the Niña is really the Santa Clara...
...sticky stuff...
...shrouds...
...doors to down below...
...the Niña down below...
...Captain's Quarters...
...the entrance to the Captain's Quarters...
...a pretty tile...
...the tiller...
...the Niña, Wilmington Delaware...
...the Pinta, Wilmington Delaware... ...we had a lot of fun visiting the Niña and the Pinta... ~Wishing you a lovely start to your week!

  1. oh what fun!! doesn't look like there were many visitors though....and too bad they didn't let you go below-decks....but thanks for the education!

sad, but that reminds me of the "HMS Bounty" that was lost during Hurricane Sandy....

    love, k

  3. I like that they tell visitors what the parts of the boat are called and give so much information.
