...One Hula Skirt = One Beach Hat...

...when I saw this pattern for the Salt Grass Beach Hat over at Salty Pearl Crochet...I knew I wanted to make it...
...and I had the 'materials. on hand...

...you may remember seeing this dollar store hula skirt on the 'river bank' at Vacation Bible School...

...and I am not likely to be wearing a hula skirt any time soon...so I thought I'd repurpose the grass into a Salt Grass Beach Hat...
...it was easy to take it apart...
...each strand of rafia is just looped over the twine tie and pulled back through the loop...so when you slide it off the twine it falls right out...
...and you're left with rafia threads about 6 ft. long each...
...I just wound those into a ball...
...I did a few test runs crocheting with the rafia and found that it was easier to work with wet...I got that idea from the Man's Mamaw who used to soak her reeds for basketmaking...and just a second in the water makes a very pliable thread...

...we had a lot to do to get ready for this year's beach trip...so...let's get crocheting...

~Have a lovely day!

  1. Oh, and you looked so cool in that hula skirt - with your red feathers and Guy Mitchell on the gramophone!
