HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
...I'll either have to come back and post about that...or do it tomorrow...the Man has been hinting all week...that I'm going to LOVE my present...haha...he's so funny...and I can't wait to see what it is...that's a really good way to build up anticipation...
...we'll celebrate later I guess...and open our little cards and presents...but I made us some Vegan 2-Ingredient Probiotic Yogurt Biscuits for breakfast...and cut them into cute little heart shapes in honour of the day...haha...
...but before that...Friday night...I baked a Banana Bread to take to Amy's Mom's...she had texted me earlier in the week to say she was going down country...north of Raleigh...to visit her Mom...and I'd not been out to Amy's Mom's in many...many years...so I said YES!...
...Saturday started really early...as I'd put in the InstaCart order the night before...so I could pick up the groceries early...
...I don't really think there's anything of note...we got regular Saltines...after getting the tiny ones last time...and the Man asked for the mushrooms and pearl onions...it was funny that they gave us the little jar of cocktail onions instead of the frozen ones...but we'll make do with that...I guess...haha...
...I had packed up Our Airman's little Anniversary gift...because I wanted to find a post office and stop on the way...
...so we headed east...and north I guess...I was chatting with Mom...and I said we went 'down' to Raleigh...and she said don't you mean up...because it is indeed...north...but I think because I grew up in the mountains and practically everywhere seemed like it was 'down' from there...anywhoo...we got off the interstate as soon as we could...to drive through the country...
...the weather was absolutely gorgeous...
...and we arrived at Amy's homeplace...this is her Grandmother's house...across the road from her Mom's...I can remember going there with Amy...and sitting in the sunny kitchen with her grandparents...having a big ol' country supper of corn and green beans and tomatoes fresh from the garden...her Grandma reminded me of Nanny...they were farmers...and although you can't really tell it from this picture...there are acres and acres of farmland behind the house...I just snapped a photo because I thought it was funny that the new owner has put a big gorilla in the front yard...
...this photo of Amy was still on the wall at her Mom's house...it was taken about the time we first met as Freshmen at university...
...we had such a nice visit with her Mom...
...we went out for lunch...originally we were planning to get takeout and bring it back home...but the weather was so gorgeous that we decided to eat outside...I had red curry at a super Thai place...sorry I had eaten most of it before I thought to take a picture...I was too busy talking...haha...
...so then we set out to walk around downtown...
...it's just a cute and quaint old southern town...a lot of people had the same idea we did...the sidewalks were pretty crowded...
...there are still a few actual stores downtown...but Amy's Mom was telling us it was nothing like it used to be...when you could do all your shopping there...but that's a sad fact of almost all small towns...
...then we did a little more site-seeing...this is the location of the birthplace of the Wake Forest College...now Wake Forest University in Winston Salem...of course...
...Southeastern Baptist Seminary is there as well...
...and then we headed back out into the countryside...back to Amy's house...I love these old barns...tobacco barns I think...there was a lot of tobacco grown in this area for sure...but not anymore...
...and past the old quarry...I can remember going out to a similar quarry in the mountains...it always seemed so spoooooky to me...quarries often end this way...once they dig down so far...it just fills up with water...and the one in the mountains was a favorite swimming spot when I was in high school...this one does not seem spooky though...because they run a scuba school here...haha...
...it was about a 3 hour trip each way...so it was pretty late when we got back...
...the Man called in an order and I stopped and picked up some Chinese food for a late (8:00 PM) supper with him...it was a fun and tiring day...and I'm happy to be home...
...this is what the pathway to the back door of the Admin building looks like...they had come and cut down another one of the huge trees around the Church...it's so sad to see them go...but they are dropping huge limbs and this one is over the sidewalk...so it could be a hazard...
...we had seen this custard mix on one of the cooking shows we've been watching James May's Oh Cook......it's pretty funny...but it's vegan and I wanted to try it...so Amazon promptly delivered me some...
...so after Church Sunday...I mixed some up...2 cups almond milk...2 Tbls sugar and 2 Tbls Bird's Custard...
...pretty simple...and it smells just like Jello vanilla cooked pudding...
...I got out a bag of those vegan vanilla wafers from the freezer...
...arranged my bananas and wafers...
...and poured the custard over...
...now we'll have to wait until it's cooled to dig in...but it looks like it's going to be delicious...
...I always hand wash my little (super sharp) crinkle cutter...and when I left it on the counter to dry the Man said that I should wrap it in something so it doesn't get dulled in the drawer...and that's a good idea...so I made a quick little cardboard cover for it before I put it back in the drawer...
...I made some SoyQuick soymilk...
...because I wanted to make vegan yogurt...
...I had a couple of cups of plain milk leftover...so I put that into my old milk jug...
...Jack-Jack got a bath...he's so mad here...he won't even look at me...poor little thing...
...in with the custard...the Man had ordered some buckwheat...I can remember once...only once...when I was little that Mom made buckwheat pancakes...I'll have to remember to ask her about it...where did she get the buckwheat...was it local...how did she make the pancakes...etc...
...and since we had missed out big Saturday morning breakfast...we decided to have a pancake supper...we mixed a cup of the buckwheat with a cup of the Man's delicious mix...
...the first couple of pancakes are never any good...
...and I usually just eat them out of hand with some Earth Balance while I make the rest of the pancakes...
...because they definitely do get better as we go along...I think as I adjust the temperature and the timing of the flip...
...and we made quite the stack of buckwheat pancakes...the Man ate 4...haha...
...and I ate two...and we still have a bunch in the fridge...
...we're nearing the end now...whew...this morning I opened up the Deva Bridge Yogurt Maker...and carefully ladled the yogurt onto some cheesecloth...to make it into 'Greek' styled yogurt...
...and then I used the leftover probiotic whey to make the little heart biscuits that you've already seen...
~Wishing you a lovely start to your week!

...2.12...Dinner and a Movie...
...the Man cooked veggie burgers on the grill...so all I had to do was make crinkle cut fries...and cut up some toppings...
...it was delicious...I love vegan sandwiches of any kind...but maybe veggie burgers the best...
...oh...and that little ball is the very last one of the rice balls that my sweet nephew had brought to the Christmas party...I had popped the leftovers into the freezer...so I just put the last one into the oven along with the fries...it was yummy...
...it was the Man's turn to choose...and he chose The American Experience - Freedom Riders on PBS...and like most of our recent racist history...it's really difficult to watch...the cruelty, violence and lack of humanity and compassion are just incomprehensible...but there were several interviews with the freedom riders and a few with the people who opposed them...so there is some hope for forgiveness and just hope that things will be better...
...what have you been watching lately?
~Have a lovely day!

...2.11...Friday Update...Madame Alexander Doll...Head Replacement...
...I started off confidently...haha...and put the pieces back inside her head...
...and then threaded the new cord up through the body...it's plenty long...but you can see where the problem is with this rebuild...those are her shoulder 'joints'??....and they're in my way...arghhhh...
...I'm guessing when they do this assembly the first time...those shoulder joints aren't there yet... ...then I got out the little toothed crimper that I had saved when I took her head off...and slid that onto the cord...and started cinching it up tight...and I wish that I could say it was easie peasie...but it was not...
...this was the point where I was seriously afraid I'd fail...and all those months of hair re-rooting were going to have been in vain...
...I absolutely could not get in there to get enough grip or traction on that cord to pull it tight enough to get her head not to be wobbly...
...so I called in the Man for some assistance...and I held the head and he pulled and pushed on the cord...but still we could not get her head tight enough...
...what I needed was something to get the crimper to press against beyond the shoulder joints...so...it's going to have to handle quite a bit of pressure...and so I put her aside for a bit...you know...to ponder...
...and my first thought was to use some wooden beads...one large one...maybe...or stack a couple...or a wooden spool...which I did not have... ...but then...serendipity...again...I know...it's absolutely amazing how the universe is always looking out for me and my little connundrums...HA!...
...when I went out to ride my bike...guess what I found just lying there in the road...it's the broken top off of some sort of wrench or ratchet thing-y...
...and my mind went immediately to how I could use that inside the dolly...crazy...I know...how my mind works...but I love it when a solution to a problem just presents itself like that... ...so I popped it into my basket...which I'm still loving by the way...
...when I got home...I went straight to the basement and drilled a hole in my new little 'solution'...came back upstairs and threaded it onto the cord...pulled everything nice and tight...and crimped the cord in place... ...and VOILĂ€!...her head is reattached ...and it doesn't wobble... ...I can turn it from side to side...and it stays where I put it... ...tilting up and down holds well too...
...so needless to say...I'm thrilled with how this ended up...now all I have to do is get her re-stuffed and re-stitched...and make her some clothes...
...the New System of Domestic Cookery reading continues apace...I'm on page 110...just into the Poultry section now...and I'm finding it all pretty gruesome and barbaric...anywhoo...I'm learning lots of new words...
...and there are a lot of Pigeon recipes...as well as Lark...and other small birds...yikes...
...and this quote is rather frightening...
"Game aught not to be thrown away even when it has been kept a very long time; for when it seems to be spoiled it may often be made fit for eating, by nicely cleaning it, and washing with vinegar and water."
...and in 1817...way before modern copyright laws...this book was originally published in England...hence the Moor fowl recipes...not sure we have any Moorland here...
...now...for the Read Harder update... ...I've penciled in a few more choices...and I've finished Hamnet...it was a super easy read...despite being mostly about a parent's worst nightmare...the death of a child...hope that's not giving too much away...
...so this weekend when I go to pick up the InstaCart...I'll take it back to the library and pick up the hold I have on the next book...totally chosen by it's super cute cover...from the list that the Read Harder folks sent me for #4. Read a book in any genre by a POC that's about joy and not trauma...but just from the cover I think it's a typical Young Adult romance novel...so that will be really different from anything I normally read...and that's what reading challenges and book clubs are all about...right?...

...2.10...What I Ate in a Day...as a Vegan...
...last night...I had mixed up my favorite overnight oats...y'all know I prefer my oats raw...this is about a cup of oats...a cup of frozen blueberries...or bloobs as we call them...and almond milk...
...in the morning I usually add a little bit more almond milk...
...for lunch...I'm gettin really good with the new griddle...this is just a regular white potato...
...and then just a regular...rather large carrot...perfectly carmelized on the griddle...
...and I had that with the last of the Man's split pea soup...and some of the stems from the collard greens...my very favorite part...and since the Man hates them...I get to eat them all...YAY! for me...
...dinner was in front of the TV again...and it's the Man's marinara over spaghetti with some homemade bread and a BIG vegan BLT salad...
...I did have a couple of snacks...just an apple...
...and a cucumber...
...what did you eat yesterday?...

...2.9...W.I.P. Wednesday...
...instead of another dishcloth...I'm using another Purl Soho pattern to make another washcloth...
...it's the soft cotton washcloth pattern...that I've made before...and I'm using a couple of little scraps of yarn...a variegated cotton and the leftover white from the other washcloth that I made...since there's white in the variegated yarn...I thought it'd be a good way to use up that little bit of white...but on the bumpy side it looks kind of wonky because I have to carry it up over the rows of variegated...but it's just a washcloth...so I'm not too bothered...
...and then I just snapped this photo on my phone to send to Mom while I was chatting with her the other day...because she had given me a bunch of yarn...years ago now...and this was still in my stash...Kitten looks angry I know...but she's actually purring here...haha....
...so I've started a little (and I do mean fiddly and little) Easter project for my girlies...so again...I can't show you much of that yet...and I'm thinking this boucle yarn may not have been the best choice...working-wise...but I think it will produce a really cute result...
...and then I really do love the internet...you can find almost anything...haha...
...when I was in high school (also elementary school and jr. high - mites and midgets)...I was a cheerleader...and we had these adorable little uniforms...with this cute navy and white pleated skirt...and a flash of red bloomer underneath...with a white sweater and saddle oxfords...pretty much exactly like the one front and center...just navy instead of red...it was a lot of fun...and this is the pattern that the skirt was made from...
...anywhoo...I was chatting with Mom the other day and I remembered that she had taken all of our measurements...in the hallway of 'W' building right after practice one day...for the seamstress to make the little skirts...and so I asked her if she still had the pattern...and of course she did not...Mom doesn't keep nearly the 'stash' that I do...haha... ...but a quick search of the interwebs produced the pattern...HA! ...I'm going to make that same skirt again...View 3...but just in white...I have a good friend who plays tennis...and there's a really nice tennis court at the Church...maybe I'll knit a tennis sweater too...
...what's in your workbasket this week?...
