Organizing with Glass Jars

I mentioned earlier that I prefer glass for storing my bulk items - so once I transfer them from their plastic bag or bottle - how do I know what I've got - soy protein looks a lot like besan/soy flour/wheat gluten - well, of course I need a label of some sort...

...so I just cut or peel the original label off the original package - and using clear packing tape - just tape that to the outside of the jar...

...this is what's working best for me right now - I find that it makes things easier to find in the pantry if the label looks like the one on the original package - instead of uniform all white labels - on some of my larger bulk items the beans and rice - I just write that out on paper in a pretty script and tape it to the jar - these labels are easily changed - and keep everything nice and organized...

  1. Such a great idea. I bet storing these dry goods in jars helps them last longer. Bob's Red Mill products are great but it is hard to reseal their plastic/cellophane bags. Thanks for such a great idea.

  2. The original labels are so much easier to recognise, a good idea.

  3. I could swear there is some kind of psychic glass jar link going on here. I am in the middle of organzing too, and in the middle of using glass to store food. I love that you used the original labels.

  4. That is a good idea. I sometimes cut the directions or recipes for a product and put that paper in with cereal or mixes that I store in Tupperware. Not exactly like relabeling but it is the original package. MOM

    Neat idea!

What do you use the soy protein powder for? Do you make smoothies with it. I have been buying a protein smoothie mix at the health food store, but it is so expensive. I have been thinking about trying to make my own.

  7. I love the idea. I have done this with tin jars, but I never thought to use glass. We buy a lot in bulk and the plastic bags get annoying in our pantry. A lot of what we buy does not come with labels (and yes, I have gotten confused b/c some look a like). Great idea!
