...Friday Favorites...

...this is totally random...but as I was dropping off the latest stack of the Man's books...(he insists on reading everything in book form - no Kindle or e-Reader for him)...the book sale won't be until February...but they take donations year round...
...I saw this book had been left on the donation table...so of course I opened it up...
...and saw this on the inside...and I was intrigued...my sweet Grandma was from Swannanoa...
...and then turning the page...it's in German...and seems to be a recipe book...
...a few pages in the recipes are in English...
...and all in the same hand...
...but occasionally...an entirely different one...

...it's fun to speculate as to why...a friend brought this dish to a potluck and the owner asked for the recipe so her friend wrote it out in the book for her...
...another recipe in a different hand...and I loved the little notes...whole wheat is really filling...only make half...
...sometimes there's a name...like with the Blakely's black beans...this is Kathy's fruit scones...
...all of the recipes are vegetarian...
...and interestingly different...Succotash Chowder...
...followed by vegetable chowder...
...followed by a Tabouli...
...I'll have to show this pesto recipe to the Man...for all his basil he's growing...and the Mondo Bizzaro sauce beside it uses a lot of basil too...
...Brocolli Noodle casserole...that's different...it's usually broccoli and rice...
...but then there's a spinach rice casserole...so those two seem backwards to me...
...spekulatius...in German again...my sissie gave me some of these windmill cookies for Christmas...and that sweet little bookmark was in the book too...
...a traditional pound cake...
...and a cardamom coffee cake...the Man would hate this one...but I think I'd like it...
...but he loves bread pudding and apple crisp both...
...I have the old Moosewood cookbook...I'll have to see if this is the full recipe...
...both the Orange cake and the Autumn Gold Soup sound good...
...and a unique Cheddar Parsnip soup...I don't usually think of putting those two things together either...
...Flädle recipe in a different hand...
...a few notes about a $20 deposit...beside a whole wheat bread recipe...I think there was another WW bread recipe too...
...Ellen's Mom's Banana Bread...
...any ideas what a Mottis Eislee is?...Mos Eisley is a Star Wars character...Noun(plural mottis)- (military) An encircled enemy unit....can't find anything on Eislee...but Eisley is of Unknown origin and means "Of Swiss origin, meaning "Cheerful""...looks like it's some sort of drink as it makes a 1/2 gallon...and the cinnamon rolls look good...
...a 'recipe'...for how to roast a butternut squash...beside some dinner ideas...
...and then a butternut squash bread...
...William's P'nut Pasta sounds good...
...some herb-y dumplings...would probably be good in some chick'n-y gravy...
...Eric's crepes in pencil in a different hand...
...and on the back flyleaf...a Playdough recipe...

...wasn't that fun flipping through someone else's handwritten cookbook...trying to figure out why someone donated such a personal and well-used/loved little cookbook...

...I took all of these photos right there at the donation table...I may try to find this book at the booksale in February...haha...

...what interesting books have you found at charity booksales?...

~Have a lovely day!

  3. My sister makes cookbooks like this. I love paging through them. She has beautiful handwriting and it is so unique. What a neat find. I hope someone didn't donate it on accident, but felt its time with them was past.

    1. Hi Beth,
...I know what you mean...I don't have really nice handwriting...but I have a few handwritten pages from my Nanny, and my aunts that I've tucked into my old cookbooks...
