...10.29...Homemade Soymilk Cost Analysis...

...so...I was chatting with a friend and mentioned that I needed to make soymilk...and she said that it couldn't possibly be "worth it" to make your own soymilk...so I had something to prove...and I'm just about nerdy enough to calculate it all out...hahahaha...

...we buy organic soybeans in a 5 lb bag for $14.49...and that lasts a long time because I only us 7 oz. per 1/2 gallon of soymilk...

...so that's 18¢ per ounce and there's 80 ounces in 5 lbs. Divide 80 by 7...(11.43) so we'll get 11 half gallons per $14.49 bag of organic soybeans with 3 ounces left over...

...soooo...a half gallon of homemade soymilk - just soybeans and water costs $1.31...and in the grocery store a half gallon of organic soymilk...also just soybeans and water costs $4.98...

...I know I should factor in some time and electricity too...so on low on an induction cooker for 1/2 hour the cost would be about 31¢...and the Vitamix (quoting the interwebs here...) A standard 1,500-watt Vitamix uses 0.125 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity for 5 minutes (it may have only been 3 minutes...I didn't keep track of that time)...of continuous blending, costing approximately $0.02 (2 cents)...so not counting any 'time' a half gallon of homemade soymilk costs about $1.64...and that's a pretty huge difference considering how much soymilk we drink around here...haha...

...and if you have to factor in time...I'm not counting the 1/2 hour of cooking time as that didn't require anything from me at all...and the blending and straining takes about 12-13 minutes before it goes into the pot...and then a minute or two for the scorching process...so we'll call that 15 minutes at the federal minimum wage for this unskilled labor...haha...so...$1.81 for that...plus the $1.64...so $3.45 in total...and that's a savings of $1.53 over the cost of the "boughten" (ND word) soymilk...

...plus I get the okara...the fiber and protein rich leftover soybean pulp that I've been using to make crackers and hummus...

~Have a lovely day!
