Another Tarte Rustique

Mom asked about the Tarte Rustique - and I made another one - cherry this time - for the Man-Cub - he loves Cherry Pie.

Basically, you just make a pie crust and roll it out - I didn't even bother with the cloth covered board - it's just sort of free form rolled out directly on the pizza stone - add the filling - here just cherries, sugar and a little bit of flour and I sprinkled some sugar on top too - dump that in the middle and fold up the sides a little bit over the fruit - bake as usual for a pie.

The Chair

Do y'all remember the Marty Robbins ballad "the chair"...

I used to listen to Country Radio when I was little and that song gave me the chills - it still does and that's what I thought of when I titled this post. It's actually a Pastor's chair that is hardly ever used - it sits behind the organ and when I play I never sit there - We've used it a couple of times for a visiting pastor at a baptism or wedding - I wonder how it got cracked...

So it sits there every Sunday forlorn and empty...

Jack Jack

That's what I call our little bundle of snuggly energy.

Here he is going for a walk in the snow - he's not very fond of the snow.

And you can see why here - this is after the walk - he crashes on his pillow in front of the baseboard heater to warm his little pink belly and trotters...

I started making an apple pie...

Happy Birthday

My sweet Sister-In-Law had a birthday and I sent her a card with a little pressie inside - she should have it by now - so it's probably safe to post a picture.

The card was fun to make - just some stamps and colored pencils and paper cuts...

...and a little crocheted dishcloth tucked inside - Happy Birthday!

The Man-Cub couldn't wait until the snow removal company came and pushed the recent snow off the Church parking lot...

That makes a huge pile of snow for tunneling and fort building - sometimes the trenches are ready made...

Guess who came for a visit...

After a 2 year hiatus...

I made the little bag for his first lost tooth - which took us by surprise as we were eating dinner with some friends the day before his 6th birthday - I remember staying up until 3 AM working on it - we had read a library book about the tooth fairy and it was a Man Fairy and he had a family - I wish I could find the title of the book because it was a hoot - so anyway - the tooth fairy on his little tooth pouch had to be a Man Fairy...

Hardanger

I need another craft like I need...

I am fascinated with Hardanger 'though - this is the altar cloth from Church - lovingly stitched by some of the ladies when the Church was first founded - there's a set for each season in green, purple, and blue - but there's no red set - we only have 2 red Sunday's a year (Pentecost and Reformation) so maybe they didn't think it was worth all the trouble - so of course I want a red set too...

Friends

It was a dark and stormy night and - The Man-Cub had some friends over - they played a marathon game of Monopoly...

It reminded me of playing with our cousins on snowy cold Saturdays when we were about the same age as the Man-Cub is now...

Book Report

The Man-Cub did his second book report on Madeline L'Engle's 'A Wrinkle in Time' - thanks to Auntie Karen who gave him the set for Christmas. I suggested a simpler book - with a simpler plot - but he insisted...

It's a Coat Hanger Book Report - and he did one with just pictures when he was in first grade - but the basic idea is that you use index cards to give your summary and some basic information about the book and attach them to a coat hanger like a mobile. The painting of the stenciled letters - to look like the book cover - took a long time as we had to wait for each letter to dry before we could paint the next one - except for K and L - hehe...

The Man-Cub wanted to use lots of pictures - those weren't required but they make a much nicer mobile...

The finished mobile - that was a lot of yarn tying - good thing we learned the square knot in Scouts...

Too Many Magazines

The Man-Cub gets too many magazines - and we've kept too many of them for too long...

They're fun but only for a short time...

We boxed them all up and donated them to his school - his teacher said that some of the reading classes could use them...

The Race is Run

We let the Man-Cub stay up way past his bedtime last night so that he could listen to the acceptance speech - he had been so excited about this election and he sat on the sofa and colored in each state on his map as it was reported and kept a running tally of electoral votes - so sweet! The remote is poised for quick switches between CNN and the major networks for the latest updates...

GET OUT the VOTE

The Man and I took the Man-Cub to the Courthouse with us and we stood in booths side by side and voted - with the Man-Cub going between us comparing notes and asking questions about the candidates and referenda...

The Man-Cub also voted at his school - they had miniature ballots - just like the real thing - called 'Kids Vote' - their results will be published in the paper along with the adult vote - pretty neat!

Waiting for Godot

Y'all know that one of the sort of weird things about me is that if I pick up a book in the library and it has never been checked out - I simply have to check it out and read it (it's like my underdog thing). So while we were at the library Saturday I picked up Waiting for Godot - I often pick up books that I've read before and just glance through them and remember the reading of them...

So this copy had never been checked out...

So, I re-read Waiting for Godot while the Man-Cub was playing with his friend at the park - it's a quick read - we were only there about an hour and a half. I'm not accustomed to reading plays so that took some getting used to. I must have been too young when I first read this - and I probably still am - because I don't really 'get it'. But it still appeals to me - almost in the same way reading the Bible does - not on an intellectual level - but something much more subconscious. I can see lots of different interpretations would be possible - a Biblical one of course - and it has a very existentialist feel about it too - and remember in high school when you had to do the Archetype thing - you could do that too. So, I don't really have a lot to say about a play in which nothing happens - they just wait (twice)...

The Elements

In Church we call the Bread and the Wine before the Words of Institution - the Elements...

I happened to have my camera at church - the Children's Choir was singing and I like to video it (you know for posterity)...

Anyway, I switched the camera to B&W and snapped a few photos before church...

One Pan Dandy

This is a recipe from my old (really old) 4-H Cookbook - called Tricks for Treats...

I have such fond memories of cooking from this little booklet with my Mom when I was little...

Here's a closeup of the recipe - the only substitutions were Morningstar Farms Crumbles for the ground beef and a few spoonfuls of Gee Whiz for the cheddar (from the UnCheese Cookbook - http://www.amazon.com/Uncheese-Cookbook-Creating-Dairy-Free-Substitutes/dp/0913990426) - but you can of course use any vegan cheese you like...

It makes a nice warm filling meal - served here with the recommended lettuce wedges and some of my favorite bread machine bread.

November in Black & White

Maya at Springtree Road http://springtreeroad.typepad.com/springtreeroad/november-in-bw/ had a wonderful idea - post everything in November in Black and White.

I'm not sure I'm up for every picture, but I'm definitely going to do a lot more Black and White. I've figured out how to change my camera setting to B&W - I think it will make me look at things differently and I'm all over that...

Trick-Or-Treat

The Man-Cub said he loved his costume this year - the best one ever!

It is pretty impressive - although bleaching it seemed to have little effect. We took it over to the church parking lot and stomped and rubbed it into the alkaline dirt over there - then when we shook it out most of the dirt fell off - apparently they are designed to shed dirt - who knew...
