...Mom's Apple Tree...

...Mom's Apple Tree fell over and we thought that was the end of that...but she recently told me that there was a sprout ...so there may be hope yet...
...AAAAND...I had one apple in the freezer from that tree...

...now...I remember from biology that apples are open pollinated...so the seeds don't always produce true to type...there's a chance that they will...but you don't necessarily know who the other parent is...

...but I thought I'd take my chances...and put the seeds in a damp paper towel...
...and then not having a pot handy...I planted them in with Douglas...my avocado...
...and GUESS WHAT?...They SPROUTED!!!...well...several of them did anyway...
...I'm still just so...so amazed...
...they're so CUTE!...and sturdy looking...
...a miracle...
..but then...all life is a miracle...

...have you ever grown an apple tree from seed...

~Have a lovely day!

  1. That is so cool!!! I hope they continue to thrive - I suspect they will since that's obviously an old, non hybrid apple tree.

  3. My orchard friend has told me the chances of an apple seed turning out like its parent is very slim, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth doing. Many great new varieties have been discovered this way. (Matt is a tiny bit obsessed with the real Johnny Appleseed and has a friend with a third generation family orchard.)

We're having a similar wait-and-see experiment, though with plums not apples. The main tree died and the sprout it sent up hasn't yet fruited. We're curious to see what sort of plum it makes when it finally does!

  4. Douglas in loco parentis! Douglas was the name of my first boyfriend at infant school. Then he fell into the canal and it was the end for me. I missed him but I missed the toast his mum gave him for break more. So shallow at that age!

...what a sweet story about Douglas...I often name plants...I anthropomorphize everything really...
